Maryland’s ‘Red Flag’ Law Turns Deadly: Officer Kills Man Who Refused To Turn In Gun

A 61-year-old man is dead after he was shot by an officer trying to enforce Maryland’s new ‘red flag’ law in Ferndale Monday morning.

Anne Arundel County Police confirmed the police-involved shooting happened in the 100 block of Linwood Avenue around 5:17 a.m.

According to police, two officers serving a new Extreme Risk Protective Order (Red Flag Law), a Maryland protective order to remove guns from a household, shot and killed the man listed on that order.

“Under the law, family, police, mental health professionals can all ask for the protective orders to remove weapons,” said Sgt. Jacklyn David, with Anne Arundel County Police.

Exactly, because a soon to be ex-spouse would NEVER use this as a legal or revenge tactic in an ugly divorce.

The whole point of “red flag” laws is so they don’t have to show just cause. All they need is a report from someone, so a judge can issue a preemptive order. Then, only if you comply with the order, can you later try to “prove your innocence” to get the red flag removed.

It’s a complete reversal of standard jurisprudence.

“the only Republican with b*lls out there is Trump”

Even he is endorsing the red flag laws, so what does that tell us?

Seems the French don’t have a monopoly on being surrender monkeys.

I’m surprised they actually knocked and announced themselves to serve him the order. I expect with the latest round of panic, they will be using “no-knock” raids to serve these orders, leading to predictable results.

Might want to reread this “old news”

“”” Officials said Willis answered the door while holding a handgun. “””

“”” Willis then placed the gun next to the door.

When officers began to serve him the order, Willis became irate and grabbed his gun.

One of the officers tried to take the gun from Willis, but instead Willis fired the gun.

The second officer fired a gun, striking Willis. He died at the scene. “””

Sounds like he went to pick the gun back up, cop grabbed for it, gun went off, cops shot him.

Granted, he was stupid for going for the gun with two cops standing there

Guess you could say he ‘acted stupidly’

Then again, who’s word are we taking? The word of the ones that ain’t dead, the two cops

His first mistake (besides pissing off the person who ratted him out) was to answer his door holding a gun. It sounds to me like he was anticipating cops showing up to grab his guns. Reminds me of suicide by cop. Now if the cops had body cameras on the footage from those would be instructive. Personally, I think this law is bullshit and I live in Maryland. If I had any guns, no one other than one or two trusted relatives would know and any government certainly would not. But when you are outgunned and pinned in your own home, the sane person would acquiesce.

I do not think it is abnormal to answer your door with gun nearby at odd hours of the day.

According to all the reports I read, the cops arrived at 5:17 AM to serve Willis who opened the door with a gun in his hand. OK, so far no harm no foul. Then a cop gave him the papers and Willis put his gun down to read the papers. Then he apparently got upset and picked the gun back up. Big mistake, dude. And then opened the door, walked outside and fired a shot which was returned by one or both of the cops and Willis was fatally struck. According to reports, the deceased was “having problems with alcoholism”. As Tonto always said, “Firewater and firesticks are bad match, Kemosabe.”

NH would not put up with it.

My son lives there and is involved in politics there and he’s told me about a few instances that he knows of where the feds tried throwing their weight around and they politely but firmly got put in their place.

Yes, the Masshole influence is affecting the state in NH but more NH-ians (or whatever they are called) are NOT happy about it.

The Live Free or Die mentality is VERY strong there.

Oh yeah! Once it is implemented, they are going to rue the day they thought about it. But by then it will be to late to do anything but cry. And the weeping will be bitter.

Nice to hear. I was up there a few years ago for a shooting class. Place is beautiful.

Masshole Influence...ain’t that the truth and I went to UMASS/Amherst. Loved the area, couldn’t stand the hippies and liberals. Amazing how liberals destroy everything that is good.

No fan of this Red Flag BS, but this seems a fair shoot. Probably the shot was due to the struggle rather than intent, but there was no time to consider the possibilities.

it was a fair shoot. i wonder if it could have been avoided by going to the mans door at a civil hour. why 5 am?

That’s mostly along the southern border and NH’s cities are not very big.

And north of Concord, the capitol, NH gets VERY desolate....
