Cops showed up at 5 AM to take his guns. Did they identify themselves? Did he think he was being broken into? More info is needed before I call the guy a moron
Surprise raids are important lest the suspect flush his guns down the toilet to destroy the evidence.

Willis then placed the gun next to the door.
When officers began to serve him the order, Willis became irate and grabbed his gun.
One of the officers tried to take the gun from Willis, but instead Willis fired the gun.
The second officer fired a gun, striking Willis. He died at the scene.”
No fan of this Red Flag BS, but this seems a fair shoot. Probably the shot was due to the struggle rather than intent, but there was no time to consider the possibilities.
