The ketogenic diet was originally developed almost 100 years ago to treat epilepsy. Nowadays, it is used as a nutrition plan by health-conscious men and women to optimize body composition and athletic performance.

Recent research suggests that high fat, very-low carb diets have another benefit: They may help control glucose, triglycerides, insulin, and body weight in people with diabetes. The research below shows the ketogenic diet may be an effective tool you can use to manage symptoms of Diabetes, alongside exercise and medication.

Best book i’ve ever read about this subject is the age defying diet by Dr atkins. He discusses in depth ketogenesis and its benefits. Also talks about some very useful supplements necessary for burning fat as your bodies main fuel. He was light years ahead of the rest of the dietary world. Most people think the atkins diet is no carbs but that is not true. It is no carbs for two weeks then slowly increasing carbs until you find the number of carbs you can eat without losing or gaining weight. Then if you want to lose eat less. If you want to maintain eat that number.

CARBS INCREASE INSULIN, INSULIN INCREASES INTRACELLULAR IRON, IRON INCREASES INFLAMMATION, INFLAMMATION INCREASES HEART DISEASE, CANCER, DIABETES & DEATH. KETO REDUCES INSULIN AND INTRACELLULAR IRON, INFLAMMATION AND DEATH. 99.99999999% OF PEOPLE DISCUSSING KETO & DIABETES KNOW ALMOST NOTHING ABOUT THE UNDERLYING PATHOPHYSIOLOGIES OF EITHER SUBJECT.

I have been doing a low-carb since January. It seems that canned veggies have additives [especially sodium], whereas frozen veggies have none. I steam/stir-fry the frozen mixed veggies. Even the so-called healthy frozen dinners have all kinds of additives.

My last blood work was excellent all around, including blood pressure. For the first time in years, the doctor did not prescribe blood pressure meds.

~~~
That is great!
It would be interesting if they did more studies comparing around low insulin levels or lack of insulin spikes with cholesterol and triglyceride levels over time. On the face you wouldn’t expect correlation but changes in metabolism, endocrine system, and blood chemistry can be rather complex.
What is a “clean Keto” diet?
It’s basically fresh non-starchy vegetables, low-glycemic fruits (berries), and locally grown grass-fed meats, and wild caught fish, butter, eggs, and nuts (not too many, though). You aren’t denying your body of any nutrients if you follow that.
I like the riced cauliflower, a great substitute for rice.
A lot of processed foods give me headaches and other problems.
I’ve gotten fairly good at avoiding repeat offenders. Once in a while, I find a new source of misery on a plate.
I use Hershey’s 100% Cacao and Swerve (erythritol) to make all kinds of chocolate treats.
Also if you can find it in your supermarket, try Rebel Ice Cream, it uses Erythritol for the sweetener. Only 4 Net Grams of Carbs per pint! It’s not quite as good as real ice cream, but close enough.
You CAN reverse type 2 diabetes. I know this because I DID IT. I went from an A1C of 10 down to an A1C of 6 in just 3 months on a keto diet. I’ve been keto for nearly three years. Jason Fung is the expert on such matters and his latest research is finding significant improvements with adding fasting to a keto diet.
Dr. Eric Berg has a lot of great YouTube videos, discussing these things.
I thought I knew a lot about nutrition before, but I realized after watching his videos, that everything I knew was wrong.
The Keto diet, at 20 to 30 carbs per day, is designed to put your body into ketosis and keep it there. Ketosis puts additional strain on the kidneys as they try to filter excess keytones. Staying in ketosis over long periods of time will damage the kidneys.
Anyone on or considering the keto diet should research the long term effects.
It should be noted that some in the medical community also call Alzheimer’s “Type 3 diabetes”, given its apparent close relationship to diabetes.
You might want to do some more research.
Keto and Intermittent Fasting is a powerful combination.
The great thing is that doing Keto reduces feelings of hunger and makes it much easier to do fasting.
In my case, it’s basically an early dinner, no breakfast, and a late lunch.
Exactly what I do. Also do locally grown veggies in season. I reversed elevated A1C, Cholesterol, LDL and Triglycerides in 12 months. Now going on year 3. I lost weight early, but not so much anymore. I can say it is all but impossible to gain weight eating this diet. If you do gain, probably eating too many nuts.
I started going to a local butcher for meats and Farmers Markets for the vegetables and eggs.
