When Life Gives You Ants, Don't Blow Up Your Backyard
Popular Mechanics ^ | By Courtney Linder Oct 23, 2019

There's a better way to get rid of them.

This man took matters into his own hands and put fire to what appears to be an ant nest in his backyard.

Not surprisingly, this didn't go well. He blew up more than just ants in this DIY-gone-wrong (though luckily no humans—or dogs—were injured).

To correctly get rid of those pesky ants, we've got a Popular Mechanics guide.

When those irritating little ants start showing up in the house, raiding the kitchen for crumbs and making cozy homes in your walls, the natural reaction is to set an ant trap or call the exterminator, right?

Uh, not for this guy.

He took matters into his own hands and decided, for some reason, that the best course of action involved pouring gasoline into the ant nest in his back yard, throwing a match in, and watching his plan go up in flames.

About two seconds after the match hit the gas-soaked soil, the ground cracked and blew up in the air with the force of a mini explosion. Please, don't try this at home.

Instead of using this half-baked method, you can do the sane thing and follow our Popular Mechanics guide to exterminating the pests, which involves professionals, a bit of cleaning, and tracking ants to their nest with liquid bait—not explosions.

Ants carry aphids to your tender plants. Get rid of ants and no aphids.

I put a small amount of ant poison on a cotton ball and put it in one of those plastic spinach boxes add more cotton balls and sugar add water and once in place, cut some holes in the bottom.

In the kitchen I spray their trails with a mixture of water, vinegar and dish soap.

Both work great.

An attorney friend of mine blew up a stump in his front yard.....and lost all the front windows in his house including a special order picture window.

Most attorneys should just stick to shuffling papers and booze.

Borax, diatomaceous earth, and silica gel all work too, and have the advantage of not leaving an oily or wet trail. These compounds work because they either clog up the breathing spiracles on the abdomen of the targeted insect, the gut biota is destroyed and they cannot digest fibrous carbohydrates, or the sharp little spikes in diatomaceous earth cut up their tender internal workings.

Works on roaches just as well as ants.

There is a technique of using dynamite or blasting powder within a very close proximity of a house. Cover the targeted point of demolition with a number of hay bales broken up, or LOTS of wood mulch. Fluffs up pretty spectacularly, but the concussion effect is greatly muffled.

Or just use a stump grinder.

Years ago I used to pour a half pint straight Diazanon directly into the holes. I don’t even think it’s available any more.

A week later it was completely abandoned and looked like it had been nuked.

When watching that video, was I the only one thinking that matches used to work a lot better back before the nanny staters screwed them up like they have everything else?
