Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may play opposite roles in childhood asthma

Dietary intake of two fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, may have opposite effects on the severity of asthma in children and may also play opposite roles in modifying their response to indoor air pollution, according to new research published online in the American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

In "Omega-3 and Omega-6 Intake Modifies Asthma Severity,” authors report that children with higher levels of omega-3 in their diets had less severe asthma and fewer symptoms in response to higher levels of indoor particulate air pollution. Conversely, children with higher levels of omega-6 in their diets had more severe asthma and more symptoms in response to higher levels of indoor particulate matter pollution.

"There is mounting evidence that diet, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, may play a role in lung health," said Dr. Brigham, lead study author and assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University.

Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, soybeans and certain nuts and seeds, are considered healthy in part because they can encourage resolution of inflammation in the body. Omega-6 fatty acids, primarily found in vegetable oils, have mixed effects on health but generally promote inflammation.

"Many children in the U.S., including those in Baltimore City [Maryland], where we conducted our research, consume a diet that deviates sharply from national guidelines. Typically, this means they are eating low amounts of omega-3, and higher amounts of omega-6," said Dr. Brigham, adding that pediatric asthma rates in the city are more than twice the national average. "Because children with asthma are already prone to inflammation and respiratory symptoms, we wanted to see if these fatty acids could be further contributing to their disease severity and symptoms in response to indoor air pollution, which is often elevated in inner-city homes."

This appears to be part of the reason fish is correlated with low asthma occurrence.

There is more often than not cat exposure in real asthmatics. Clinically asthma is confused with many other conditions that cause wheezing.

For most of my life I thought asthma was a condition from birth.

I have a triplet/twin sister who was/is that way from birth, which is why I thought that....

Imagine my surprise when one day contractors were installing new carpet at my workplace in the daytime instead of as requested at night and I reacted to the chemicals in the method they were using...

The ER doctor the company dragged me to advised me to carry my inhalant with me at all times as obviously the asthma attack was brought on so quickly.

I advised him that I did not have asthma and never had asthma. He quipped, “you may not have had it in the past; you certainly have it now!”

Was the Center Manager (a GREAT manager!) was so ticked off at the contractor! She was no upset at me or the cost to them for the ER visit, thankfully. :) She was really ticked off because she’d taken great pains to set it up so none of her employees should have been impacted.

She was one of two Center Managers that set the Gold Standard for taking care of employees.
