Carnival crisis grows after another Princess cruise ship goes on lockdown after a former passenger dies from coronavirus

Some passengers on Princess Cruises' Grand Princess ship were told on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to stay in their rooms before receiving coronavirus screenings, the company said in a statement. The order came after a passenger on the Grand Princess' prior cruise died on Wednesday of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. snip...

The Grand Princess is now nearing the end of a 15-day cruise that began in San Francisco and is scheduled to end there on Thursday.

Princess Cruises said in a statement that it was working closely with the CDC and following its recommendations. "The CDC is continuing to actively collect information and is collaborating with us to determine what, if any, actions need to be taken during the current Hawaii cruise and upon the ship's return to San Francisco. We have shared essential travel and health data with the CDC to facilitate their standard notification to the State and County health authorities in order to follow up with individuals who may have been exposed to the people who became ill," the company said. snip….

The Grand Princess incident comes on the heels of the weekslong quarantine of passengers and crew members on Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess ship in February. Medical experts criticized the quarantine, saying passengers should not have remained on the ship. Over 700 people who were on the ship ended up contracting the coronavirus by the end of the quarantine, up from 10 when it started, and six people have died.

They have to dock that thing to allow the virus to die. no way they can clean existing germs for the whole ship

Carnival was also hacked and had customer data stolen. That could end up in an expensive lawsuit.

It's one thing to be under non-American countries jurisdiction , but getting involved with us and our agencies regulations, lawyers and politicians is going to be a nightmare for all involved. -Tom

The Grand Princess is scheduled to dock tomorrow (Thurs) in San Francisco.

It will be interesting to see how the Calif. politicians handle this problem.

It is 11PM Eastern, so I am heading for bed and will check in tomorrow. -Tom

California State has declared an official Emergency.

It gives the governor and health department enough power to refuse this ship docking. And/or to force all passengers into quarantine.

But they won’t use it.

Another article said these were passengers who were on a back-to-back cruise, meaning they stayed on the ship for a second trip. They were also on the cruise with the earlier coronavirus passenger.

This will be a new decision making problem for the Calif. politicians.

Remember last month when the DIAMOND Princess was impounded in Japan, and the Americans wanted the American passengers brought home?

We will see how this works out. -Tom

UPDATE excerpt- Int. Business News March 5,

Californian authorities refused to allow cruise ship Grand Princess to sail back to San Francisco from Hawaii on Wednesday night after it was revealed that a man who had travelled in the ship in its previous voyage died of coronavirus. Thousands of holidaymakers in Grand Princess are stranded after officials demanded more time for testing and screening of people onboard.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said that it is feared that 11 passengers and 10 crew members are potentially infected with Covid-19.Newsom confirmed that a 71-year-old man who had travelled in the ship when it sailed to Mexico died of coronavirus, becoming the first fatality in the state.

The ship is held off the coast to allow officials more time for testing of "a number of passengers and crew members that have developed symptoms", the governor said, according to AFP. "So we're holding that ship, which (has) thousands of passengers as well, off the coast, and we'll be conducting those tests," Newsom added.
