April 18, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 04/18/2020 5:35:11 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I planted a flat of 50 Nasturtium yesterday, after soaking the seeds for a few days.

Dwarf Mix (bright oranges and yellows)

Empress of India (dark chocolate w/dark leaves)

‘Something’ Cream (too lazy to go look at the package, LOL!)

I plan on each garden bed having a border of Nasturtium, Marigold or Calendula this season.

This is actually an eye-catching Japanese creation----but you can substitute your own garden vegetables.

Farmers’ Market Fantasy

Layer on plate:
sauce of curried fresh carrot juice
shower of blanched okra & mitsuba bits
grilled green & yellow patty pan squash
sautéed spinach with sesame, garlic, soy sauce
crispy polenta cake
fire-roasted anaheim chile
fresh goat cheese & asatsuki
cumin dusted grilled beet
spicy smoky heirloom tomato & Thai basil
roasted japanese eggplant, maldon smoked sea salt flakes

I tore my nasturtiums out because I’m trying to get rid of snails. :(

I’ll plant some more after I get rid of a bunch of the snails maybe.

It was the tired stuff from last year anyway.

My daughter and I have been doing nightly snail hunts for about a week. The first two nights we found dozens. Last night only a few.

We started a bunch of seeds today. We’re going to start just about everything in our usual throw it against the wall and see what sticks manner because we aren’t too good at this. :)

“We started a bunch of seeds today. We’re going to start just about everything in our usual throw it against the wall and see what sticks manner because we aren’t too good at this. :)”

Well, that’s ONE option! You can always read the seed packet label, you know, LOL!

I must be on a ‘Green Acres’ kick lately because this immediately came to mind:

Little Girl to County Agent Hank Kimble: “Once you plant them, how do the seeds know what to grow into?”

Hank Kimble: “Well, that’s easy! They read the seed packet!”

Thanks! I’ll be here all week! Try the veal and don’t forget to tip your Waitress!

I watched every one of those videos.

That guy has way too much time on his hands. lol

Those modular concrete wall sections are cool, though.

Keto Diet Is Best Way to Combat the Flu
WDDTY ^ | December 5th 2019 | Bryan Hubbard
FR Posted on 4/23/2020, 4:17:04 PM by nickcarraway

Keto diet is best way to combat the flu image The flu season is upon us—and the ketogenic diet is the best way to tackle it. The high-fat, low-carbs diet helps the immune system combat the virus, new research has discovered.

The diet activates a sub-set of T cells in the lungs that trap the virus and stops it spreading. The discovery is something of a scientific first because the T cells, known as gamma delta, hadn’t been thought to be part of the immune system’s response to influenza.

Researchers from Yale University made the discovery when they fed two diets—the keto and a high-carb diet—to laboratory mice who were then infected with the influenza virus. Those on the keto diet had a higher survival rate because it triggered the release of the gamma delta cells, while the standard high-carb diet didn’t have the same protective effect.

The release of the T cells must have something to do with the way the body burns fat, said lead researcher Visha Dixit.

The keto diet includes meat, fish, poultry and non-starchy vegetables.

Found a few pictures of the greenhouse when she was newly built (2 years ago) and not full of STUFF, so anyone interested in building a greenhouse from a kit can get some ideas. After the pad was in, it took us a good 6 days to finish it. Do NOT believe it when the packaging tells you it can be done in 8 hours! And *I* had a professional builder (Beau) on the project!

Lots of people are doing Keto with great results in weight loss.

We prefer to eat seasonally and ‘as close to the source’ as we can, but I do have a few Keto cookbooks and I like some of the recipes, especially roasting veggies. :)

And that baking an egg in an avocado half is Da Bomb! :)

LOL! It’s working out pretty sweet, I will say that! It only took me until I was 57 for that particular dream to come true!

My first ‘greenhouse’ was made from old sliding glass doors I found when I was cleaning out the chicken coop, soon after I had bought my other farm.

I leaned them against a south-facing wall...and proceeded to COOK and/or FRY anything I put in there, LOL!

Live and learn! :)

The avocado really doesn’t impart much flavor, so go heavy on the seasonings and the bacon, for sure! It bakes up nice and CREAMY, though. :)
