University of Washington Medicine ramps up study of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin for COVID-19 treatment

One of the treatments touted by President Donald Trump for COVID-19, a combination of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine and the antiviral drug azithromycin, is the subject of a nationwide study with UW Medicine playing a role.

The Phase 2b clinical trial, sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease at the National Institutes of Health, will involve 2,000 outpatients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are in the early stages of treatment.

We know from a number of different other kinds of infections that if antiviral treatment is going to be effective, it tends to be most effective if it’s given very early on,” Ann Collier, a professor at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine, said in a video about the study.

The two drugs have been the subject of other studies — including a complementary 630-patient trial in which UW Medicine is also involved. That smaller trial is designed to focus on the effect of the drugs on viral shedding, while the larger trial will focus on clinical outcomes.

Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are attractive drug candidates for treating COVID-19 because they’ve already undergone extensive testing for other medical applications, such as treating malaria and autoimmune diseases such as lupus.

However, the interest shown by Trump in hydroxychloroquine and a similar drug, chloroquine, has led to shortages for patients who need those drugs for other types of treatment. Moreover, the studies conducted to date have raised questions about the drugs’ efficacy.

“There have been a number of publications looking at outcomes in hospitalized patients given this treatment,” Collier said. “But none of them have been [conducted using] the rigorous study design that is usually used to determine whether treatments are effective.”

In addition to UW, 30 other sites across the country associated with the AIDS Clinical Trials Group will be enrolling patients for the randomized, controlled study. Half the participants will receive the drug combination for seven days, while the other half will receive placebos. There’ll be six months of follow-up afterward.

Hydroxychloroquine carries a risk of causing heart problems — but Collier said the drug dosage has been adjusted to address the Food and Drug Administration’s concerns, and patients will be closely checked for signs of toxicity.

In a news release, NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said the study should provide definitive answers about the drug combination’s effects.

“Although there is anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin may benefit people with COVID-19, we need solid data from a large randomized, controlled clinical trial to determine whether this experimental treatment is safe and can improve clinical outcomes,” Fauci said.

The trial is open to outpatients aged 18 or older who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are experiencing symptoms, but have no need for hospitalization. The first dose of study treatment is to be administered within 96 hours of the positive test. Those interested in participating in the trial should email actg.communications@fstrf.org or actu@uw.edu, or call or text 206-773-7129.

STUPID IDIOTS FORGOT THE ZINC!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WILL BE A FAILURE!!!!!!!! Looks like willful stupidity. Plaquenil allows zinc into the cells and the zinc does the heavy lifting of killing the virus rather than the virus killing the cell.

10’s of 10000’s have died needlessly-

NY just put out their ‘study’ which everyone knew darn well would indicate it ‘failed’ that said there was ‘no benefit’ to HCQ- but only until you get to the end of the study do you find that they used it on only the very sickest patients- likely those too far gone to save with any drugs-

The opposition to HCQ is purely Satanic in nature- nothing else can explain that disgusting vile resistance to a life saving drug simply because they hate Donal Trump- it’s pure evil- literally 10’s of 1000’s have died- and the msm is silent- States like NY and Penn mandated sending sick people ot nursing homes- knowing many m ore would die- What they did was premeditated murder- and the msm is silent on it! They should be screaming from the rooftops about this- people should be losing their jobs- but sadly noone cares that nearly 100,000 lost their lives because some Devil Driven politicians hate Donald Trump apparently-

It is a very shameful thing this country has done to good innocent folks who are now no longer with us for no reason at all except for the fact that some disgusting people hate Trump-

Do you actually think they want the test to succeed.

[[will involve 2,000 outpatients who have tested positive for COVID-19]]

Those that oppose HCQ so fiercely will claim that these ‘outpatient’ people weren’t really ‘all that sick’ and likely ‘recovered on their own’

The despicable left have every base covered in their insanely deranged hatred of everything Donald Trump

"In a news release, NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said the study should provide definitive answers about the drug combination’s effects."

What Dr. Fauci said at the link:

“We urgently need a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19. Repurposing existing drugs is an attractive option because these medications have undergone extensive testing, allowing them to move quickly into clinical trials and accelerating their potential approval for COVID-19 treatment,” said NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. “Although there is anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin may benefit people with COVID-19, we need solid data from a large randomized, controlled clinical trial to determine whether this experimental treatment is safe and can improve clinical outcomes.”

Really good news, and about time too.

folks in some states can’t even get it until they are in ICU fightign for every breath- fighting for their lives- when it’s too late to administer it- If a person lives in one of those states, they can claim ‘right to try’ all they like- but those states will indicate that the right to try only exists at a certain point because the EO was for ‘emergency use’ only, (Which means respiratory failure) or so they will claim- then they will deign to ‘allow’ you to try it-

Pharmacies in soem of these states I believe are still barred from filling prescriptions written by doctors on an outpatient basis- when the drugs will work the best- and when the person can themselves, add zinc to the protocol

Zinc is not mentioned in the orignal post. This study is about hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin on Covid-19, without zinc. It is still a step towards getting hard clinical proof of what Dr. Vladimir Zelenko has found working on his patients (HQL + azithromycin + zinc).
