Ireland court rules that Subway's sandwich bread is not legally bread
ABC News ^ | October 1, 2020 | Jon Haworth

LONDON -- Ireland’s Supreme Court has issued a ruling declaring that for the purposes of tax law, the bread served in Subway's hot sandwiches does not actually meet the legal definition of “bread” because of its sugar content and is rather a "confectionary or fancy baked good."

The case was brought before the court by Subway franchisee Bookfinders Ltd. which claimed that the bread Subway served qualified as a “staple food,” which, in Ireland, means that the bread would be exempt from value-added tax (VAT), thereby saving Subway money.

There are lots of fruit that, culinary speaking, are treated as vegetables: squash, cucumbers. basically anything that has seeds in it.

It’s bread, just not really good bread.

This is Supreme Court material?

This is the idiocy that the VAT or a National Sales Tax or so-called “Fair Tax” would get you.

It’ll be illegal to grow your own vegetables.

“I think the result in this case has more to do with the government’s desire to keep Subway’s taxes high than it has to do with Subway’s bread.”

Ding, ding, ding. WE HAVE A WINNER!

The basic purpose of government, whether here or there, is the extraction of money to pay for more government.

The Subway owner is trying to lower the price of his product to the public. He won’t make any more money by winning the lawsuit. He might, however, sell more product as it will look more attractive when compared with the competition. Or, perhaps burgers and other alternatives are not taxed because they are staple foods?

Bread making requires some practice and some experience. You are correct the measurements for the ingredients have to be pretty correct and exact, unless you are making a fairly primitive easy to make type of bread. Keep at it, you will succeed. Don’t get discouraged by an example of one.

LOL!

10% sugar seems like a lot to add to bread. But not surprising. This is capitalism. They want it to taste good and get people wanting more. No different than McDonalds. MCD doesn’t sell itself on being ‘healthy’ they sell it on good times and good taste.

But since linear logical thought is racism, it’s probably wrong for me to say “caveat emptor”. So, we need government regulators to decide exactly how much of each ingredient must be added in order to call something what it is.

Subway can just call it a bun, instead of bread. “triple tripe sandwich with extra cheese on an elongated bun” but it’s the sugar you need to worry about.

I am going to chime in here are you anti-subway idiots

30 to 40% of my body mass consists of veggie patty or their tuna hoagie I put all the vegetables. they bake their own bread which is very fresh and very good. The ovens are right there in front of you. They’re a bakery. I like the nine grain bread

Go ahead and review the ingredients on the veggie patty- it’s quite an incredible thing mostly brown rice and mushrooms

And you notice it’s stupid article which I keep seeing in all these high leftist courts in Europe or New York that have determined that their bread is not bread - that’s idiotic. They bake it right in front of you !

If you don’t like sugar don’t eat it ! it’s a simple carbohydrate and GREAT FUEL

When we were kids in big swim tournaments - we used to take Jell-O boxes and eat the Jell-O raw for just pure sugar , before the race

So you weenies , writing these stupid articles, trying to trash subway

which is the greatest sandwich place ever invented

should just go home

Subway’s rolls all suck, but I like their flatbread.

I wonder if that was included in the ruling.

You’re so marinated in commercial American-think you don’t even consider there to be anything wrong with it.

The Irish shouldn’t be telling anyone what bread is or isn’t. The French, Italians, and some others...sure. They make good bread. Irish bread is nasty. Too little gluten, tends to get hard quickly and fall apart, etc..

Bread makers are great.
Try again.
Maybe with a premade mix.

Subway hasn’t tasted good to me for a decade. Sure, some fresh veggies, but otherwise simple carb overload. Never enough meat in their sandwiches. And a rice sandwich? Really?

I think you misjudge me. I am the type of person who likes to know stuff. I know MCD food is loaded with sugar. I know Subway is not as healthy as their pedophile ads (since rescinded) suggest. I am a skeptic. But I am not one to say that government has to regulate everything, down to the ingredients and percentages in bread. I am for full disclosure, though. Subway should disclose the contents imo, and we do have laws requiring disclosure of calories in food. Fraud laws are, imo, sufficient deterrent if properly enforced to cover most of this regulation on business.

Gave up bread when I went Keto. I also learned that so-called “Keto Bread” isn’t.

The only way to get Keto Bread is to make it yourself.

So....it has too much sugar in it to be “bread”. Therefore, it must be cake.

What the heck... I say, let them eat cake!
