Watching the Skies: 5 bright planets in sight this month

Mercury will likely be the hardest planet to spot, and binoculars would help. First, look for Venus. Venus is still the brightest of the planets and the third brightest celestial object, only behind the sun and the moon. Venus will be easy to find in the east before and during dawn.

Once you’ve located Venus, look beneath it toward the horizon. Mercury will be low in the east-southeast about an hour before sunrise.

Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible in the evening. Mars is getting less bright by the day, but it will still be easy to find in the eastern sky. The best viewing of Mars will be in the south a few hours after sunset.

Jupiter will appear to the west during twilight. Saturn will become visible just a little later and it will be just to the left of Jupiter. Jupiter is the brightest of the two planets, so once you’ve identified Jupiter in the west, it will be easy to find Saturn nearby.

You can easily trace the ecliptic at night by noting the position of the moon, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter this evening. Mars is especially bright and Jupiter is also pretty easy to spot. Saturn is not so bight but will be to the left of Jupiter.

Night before last I went out to observe the moon in spectacularly clear skies. As I came in my wife asked what I was looking at. I told her the moon and an especially bright Mars.

She went to look. I’m not sure she had actually ever seen Mars before.

Mars was there, all by it’s self with no mistaking it

“Skies” is a verb. Look up—do you see more than one sky? He skies the ball is proper use.

My cell phone with the Sky Map app can see all the planets and take great photos too.... well screenshots from the app.

Right now if you look up in the night sky you can see Jupiter and Saturn near each other and if you squint you can see Pluto : )
