The double-bazooka design was first used by the British in their Chain-Home radar system in WW2. It was on the 10 meter band. It let them see German planes coming across the channel.
The bazooka has a signal loss compared to a simple dipole but has far greater bandwidth...many antenna designs trade signal loss for increased bandwidth.
The highest bandwidth antenna I know of is the discone, its bandwidth is amazing. You always see a discone at airport control towers as it can cover the entire aircraft band with a flat swr near 1:1
I once built a rather large discone that had a flat swr from 2 meters down to 11 meters. The neighbors hated the sight of it...lol

I can hear traffic! It turns out I was listening to the wrong freq. I thought I had to listen to the closest repeater instead of the club freq. I’ve taken 10 practice tests and scored between 89% and 97%. I’m looking to test asap as well getting a base station. What do people recommend as a starter? Is the Icom 718 with a J pole worth it?
Over the last month or two JABit helped me design a 40m loop antenna for my roof. As soon as it’s warm enough I’m going to install it and begin exploring the HF bands. Right now I’m just a VHF and UHF guy.

After fussing with antennas and amature radio for more than fifty years I have come to embrace a simple truth. Having a good knowledge of theory will always produce good results, but for me, at least, a really great antenna is a matter of luck. There are so many factors which are either beyond my control or understanding that when things don’t work out I’n not too upset, and when I stumble on an outstanding antenna setup I just sit back and enjoy it.

I had the same issues as you; in my area the little ones wont get transmit over the next hill, and really only can be used to receive.
I bellied up and got a 50W 2M mobile unit with a J pole. I can hear and hit my local club’s repeater now.
