I wanted a bit more “oomph” from my 1W 1.2 GHz HT, so I purchased a PC board Yagi to get another 6 dB.
I have a Yaesu FT-911 1.2 GHz HT. It is a 1990’s rig gifted me by the wife of a Silent Key at my work. It is a sweet handheld, but with limited power.

I've never owned anything on 23cm. It's a very small group of hams that use it. 2m, 220MHz and 70cm are easy to use and commonly in use. I have DMR gear, but I'm tethered to an openSPOT gateway to use it. No repeaters in my area. Nearly the same for C4FM (Yaesu digital).
When I'm less busy with work, I'll try out some low band digital using audio interface boards with DSP software on a PC to drive.
The Yagi on a PC board falls in a similar category to the 2.4 GHz Bluetooth, ZigBee(802.15.4) and DigiMesh. The XBee modules use that style of antenna.
