When did indoor air become cold and clean?
Air conditioning is one of those inventions that have become so ubiquitous, that many in the developed world don’t even realize that less than a century ago, it didn’t exist. Indeed, it wasn’t so long ago that the air inside our buildings and the air outside of them were one and the same, with occupants powerless against their environment.
Eric Dean Wilson, in his just published book, “After Cooling: On Freon, Global Warming, and the Terrible Cost of Comfort,” dives deep into the history of this field. It took more than just inventing the air conditioner to make people want to buy it. In fact, whole social classes outright rejected the technology for years. It took hustle, marketing skill, and mass societal change to place air conditioning at the center of our built environment.
Wilson covers that history, but he has a more ambitious agenda: to get us to see how our everyday comforts affect other people. Our choice of frigid cooling emits flagrant quantities of greenhouse gas emissions, placing untold stress on our planet and civilization. Our pursuit of comfort ironically begets us more insecurity and ultimately, less comfort.

It’s a class thing, not a race thing.
Whenever ruling class people have something that makes them feel special (AC, nicely trimmed green lawns, nice cars, cross-country flights). they think that’s great.
Then the market system figures out how to let the middle class in on it. At that point, the Ruling Class finds reason after reason why the middle class shouldn’t be able to have the luxury that used to set the Ruling Class apart.

If you live further north you use less energy for air conditioning but more for heat.
I suppose one could migrate back and forth but that uses energy as well.

Freon has been recognized as an ozone-destroying agent forever and hasn’t been used as a heat transfer medium for decades. The author describes his “crusade” to eliminate Freon from the hands of a few people on the Internet secondary market (for profit) as a holy calling to change the hearts and minds of the climate skeptics. What utter garbage.

I would bet a month's salary that neither one of these "yahoos" would ever give up their air conditioning to go back to the conditions we all used to live and work in.
It's easy to write and talk about it, but walking the walk versus talking the talk is two different things.

Comrades, please do not be misled into thinking that government officials enjoy air conditioning. In fact AC makes many of them physically ill. But scientists have proven that for government workers to work their best a constant 73º temperature must be maintained. It must be remembered that they are working on all our behaves after all.
