It is possible to buy the coffee used by the U.S. Navy? Is there such a thing as Navy Coffee?

I like drinking coffee and I keep an eye out for new good brands to try. Over the years I've come across references (such as in a Tom Clancy or in a Mitch Rapp novel) to "navy coffee". Apparently it is served at the White House unless the Biden administration has deemed it to be racist.

Is there actually a specific type of coffee used by the U.S. Navy? Is it something available for purchase for the public?

I'm also curious what kinds of coffee people here drink. I'm not interested in anything that is 'fair trade", anti-GMO or 'organic".

It's bought in bulk, in No 10 cans from the lowest bidder. Drank the stuff for years. "Coffee" is what is stamped on the outside the can. What is inside is ground up brownish black stuff which when brewed in an engineroom coffee maker turns produces stuff the color of bilge water.

I have free will and will not elect to drink that stuff if other options are available.

They say that in the Army, the coffee’s mighty fine. But it looks like muddy water, and tastes like turpentine.

Is this coffee really THAT good?

I, too, am always trying new brands to find what is best for my taste buds, so I am curious, as you are.

“navy coffee” is probably more a description of the manner of making coffee than a brand. To make navy coffee, wait until the nearest chief pours all but a spit of the pot into his mug (of you empty the pot, you make the next batch, and chiefs don’t make coffee), then fill the coffee filter 2/3 of the way up with grounds, no scooping or measuring. This should result in a rich syrupy fog lifter, fit to put hair on the chest of even the most baby smooth of ensigns.

I order from Cole Coffee, Berkeley.

I am advancing the hypothesis that really good coffee produces communists. I challenge anyone to refute it.

Brew a pot of Folgers and put it in my thermos for the day. (Or two).

I’m guessing the large “can” (now plastic) costs about $10 or so? That’s probably the price of one cup of Starbucks.

You are confusing “really good coffee” with “burnt coffee.”

I get my coffee from a retired Coast Guard officer.

https://lifeboatcoffee.com/

The wild grown Papua New Guinea is the best Papua New Guinea I have had, and his Colombian and Sumatra are good, too.

The owner open carries (two sidearms) while running his coffee house, which is aggressively pro-life, pro-2A, and non-masky. (One of his side arms is a Soviet pistol he traded for while performing customs in exchange for a carton of Marlboros that he bought for $10). He roasts on the premises, and has earned my business.

Don’t know about “navy coffee” but 4 to 8 watch coffee in the morning is something that takes a while to get used to. :-0

Don’t get me started on the biscuits.

Working For the Navy as a civilian for 31 years what I saw was more about the coffee maker and coffee mugs than the coffee itself......as in it is sacrilege to ever clean either one.

I know someone who served in the Navy and he agrees with the quality of the coffee.

We had a big coffee urn on the mess deck that sat on a counter. The mess cooks would reach up top, take the lid off it, pull out the basket of coffee grounds, add new coffee, put it back together, turn on the water and when the sight glass was full turn the water off and fire it up. Well the coffee was getting pretty rank so the chief mess cook told them to get up on the counter and clean out the insides. They did and found a pair of skivvy shorts in there. Guess someone wasn’t all that fond of the crew.

I disagree. If the stuff sold at Starbucks most hoarded undrinkable coffee produced anywhere on the planet and yet the communists LOVE IT!
