European environmentalists’ insanely stupid plan to decrease shipping pollution

The news reads like a farce but, apparently, they’re certain it will work—and they’ve got history on their side. It’s just that history really isn’t very good.

Environmentalism, as much as anything, represents semi-educated man’s yearning to return to a less complicated past, one in which man was dependent upon nature’s vagaries, rather than master of them. Maybe that explains why European environmentalists have decided that the way to reduce carbon emissions from shipping is to use “giant kites”—or, as humans called them for thousands of years, “sails.” This is not a joke. It’s absolutely real and highlights just how ludicrous the modern left has become.

There is nothing in the world more charming than a movie or TV series based upon Jane Austen’s books. Ang Lee’s 1995 version of Sense and Sensibility is so beautifully photographed that every scene makes one want to dive into the screen and share that world. The same is true for the six-part 1995 version of Pride & Prejudice. Could anything be more lovely than that world of polite people in lovely costumes living in exquisite houses with respectful servants, all located within a fresh, green landscape?

What none of these shows quite capture is the reality of life in those days: City streets were ankle deep in fecal matter and urine from both animals and people. Fifty percent of all children died before the age of five from childhood diseases. This was paired with the fact that up to 50% of all women died in childbirth. Even the smallest cut or bug bite, if it got infected, killed—assuming physicians didn’t first kill the patients with bleeding, mercury treatments, or any other of the murderous potions that doctors favored.

Remember that the first step is not often the goal. The final boal is probably a return to the dark ages combined with little or no trading.

Meanwhile...

In Novemember, the Biden admin pressured the ports of LA and Long Beach to institute a new queue policy that placed many ships further off-shore where they would not count in statistics. Now those ships are being counted again, and surprise! The ship congestion is worse than ever. The media lied.

They are also encouraging their populations to go back to the ways of their hunter-gatherer ancestors.

Environmentalists always leave me with the impression that they were all born yesterday.

"The COVID years are just the warm-up for what’s to come unless we stop the leftists and their insanity."

"We" cannot stop the Leftists. They have too many unthinking/ignorant followers who will always be able to overcome our efforts. The Leftists will always stop themselves. Their 'solutions' are aways so insane that they ultimately fail. The only problem is that many of their followers, and also many of us often perish in the effort.

And I suppose stone knives and spears is a little too much technology for the peasants too. Makes them too dangerous. Just gatherers, then.

I have a solution. Make everything at home using raw materials from your own property. Oh, wait.

The kites are potentially a good idea, as long as they come about for economic savings rather than enviro wacki-ism

This system appears to be useful in a limited situation. Wind would need to be blowing directly over the stern plus or minus about 25 degrees on either side of the stern. Wind from other directions could cause the ship to have to fight a sideways pull if they want to maintain a fixed course. Now if the ship is allowed to follow a course which yields best wind direction, then the ship’s schedule is out the window.

The sail system would be useless when heading into the wind.

Lastly the sail would only be usable under certain situations, wind in correct direction, acceptable wind speed range and ship out in the open ocean. Could not sail the ship into the port, could not deploy the sail in light or heavy winds. Also if kite sail drops into the water ship may run over the line fouling the prop or stop to retrieve the sail.

There’s a reason sails like those pictured in post 11 above were the best solution, not kites. Sails allow the vessel to travel at all points of the compass, unlike a spinnaker or a kite.
