Funk pretty much started with James Brown.
Grand Funk Railroad, isn’t funk, it’s just a play on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, which went through their hometown of Flint, Michigan. [I have a friend who is really into trains]
Renegades of Funk
I could go with Bootsy Collins or the Isley Brothers as semifinalists, but James Brown without question. The hardest working man in show business!
Parlianent Funkadelic Flashlight is a goodnplace to start
Dyke and the Blazers, The Wobble
The Temptations, Papa Was a Rolling Stone
I’ve got me some early Parliament Funkadelic, live from the Meadowbrook Amphitheater (MI) and it is gooo-ood!
Dayton, Ohio has a proud history when it comes to funk music, and the Gem City is considered to be the birthplace of funk music.
James Brown- King Records, Brewster Ave. Cincinnnati. Isley’s are from here too & Bootsy BABY! is a local icon. What’s odd is the Funk Hall Of Fame in Dayton.

The Ohio Players, best album covers ever.
Snoop Dog’s first album is basically a love letter to P-Funk
