I tried to register on truth social but it required a cell phone number to accept a text message for confirmation. Bad idea.

Wise, I absolutely agree. There is no reason why they should need a phone number.

The phone number verification is sort of important if you want to weed out bots. It assures Truth that a real person is signing up. It also helps to prevent people from setting up multiple accounts as I'm sure each user account needs to be tied to a unique phone number. Once you try to use that phone number again, I'm sure it throws a flag and prevents the account from being created. Anybody trying to create multiple accounts on a social media platform are usually doing so to create mischief. I'm glad Truth is taking steps to prevent that.

Truth Social is still relatively small compared to the other social media platforms but they seem to be doing a lot of things right so that they can properly scale while providing a great experience for the users.

Twitter may have some 300 million users but it's a cesspool with a huge percentage of those users unverified, fake or bots and only there to disrupt and cause trouble. We don't want to re-create that with Truth.

Yep, it’s a non starter for me. I wont do it.

But on the flip side of the coin, I get it. I believe I understand exactly why.
If I ever made a site or app again that allowed users to communicate, I would build in some robust authentication, not just to protect user accounts, but also to prevent people from creating lots of troll and bot accounts.

You and I tend to look at these platforms in terms of free speech, which is a VERY important issue, but on the other side of the issue are people who just use the platforms to troll people, harass people, and even scam or victimize people. When you have an open registration system, and you try to ban them, they just come right back again. If you ban IPs, they just get VPNs and proxies. You end up spending a lot of time and resources chasing trouble-makers.
