For American men, watching sports is a way to bond with pals, vicariously live out athletic dreams, and escape life’s pressures. It’s certainly no place for lectures.
In a perfect world, sports and politics would never mix, but our world’s far from perfect. In the ’60s, athletes like Muhammad Ali began using their platforms to draw attention to societal woes. Back then, it was frowned on, but in 2022 it’s more feature than bug. The slippery slope wins again -- the Disease of Wokeness is consuming sports top to bottom.
The NFL was the first to catch a serious case, and with Kaepernick’s help, it metastasized rapidly. He was a mediocre QB and an astonishingly ungrateful person. But credit where due, he saw his path to fame and fortune and went all in -- he took a stand against racial injustice and police violence against blacks.
Just one problem -- the racial injustice he railed against didn’t exist. Smart people like Heather MacDonald have demonstrated this repeatedly. Didn’t matter one iota -- the truth means nothing under Woke Doctrine. The NFL was off and running, as was Kaepernick. He signed a multi-million-dollar deal with Nike to push false, destructive narratives.
The kneeling abomination took hold. Championship teams began pointedly skipping White House visits, and other leagues followed suit. The Golden State Warriors pre-emptively (and amusingly) declined their White House invitation. The MLB moved its Allstar Game from Atlanta over Voter ID concerns. Imagine requiring ID to vote. Oh, to be so oppressed.

In a sane world this is true. In times of craziness, when someone is trying to change your entire way of life, everything IS politics. For Jews living in Germany when Kristallnacht happened everything in their life, including staying alive, became about politics. In America, we are coming to (if not already at) one of those times.
“More importantly, my kids don’t watch it.”
That’s the important thing: kids who don’t watch or play sports become adults who don’t pay to watch others play sports. The NFL, NBA, MLB - they’re doomed to become as relevant as yachting to Americans.
Way to hit it out of the “Ballpark”😉
Who is “we?”
Hoping that this is not too far off topic, but I recall from a few years back watching a Flyers game from the Wells Fargo Center with the local broadcast feed. One of the ads featured a deal that for about 80 or 90 USD, one got a fairly decent seat plus unlimited chicken wings at the concessions. And it made me think, no wonder why I can’t stand the loud music and sound effects at NHL arenas these days as all of that is aimed at these people that are probably that good bit overweight from eating all of that junk food and want to keep on acting like their still twelve years old even though they are in their thirties or forties.
And all of that woke garbage is also aimed at that kind of loud and childish way people like that take in professional sporting events these days.
I for one will be enjoying the Tennessee v Georgia game at 2:30 in a bar with a bunch of perfect strangers having a good time. 👍
One good sign I’ve noticed is that the IOC is having a harder and harder time getting cities in First World countries to bid on hosting Olympic Games.
What’s this “we” Schiff kemosabe?
Because we can’t watch the propaganda news anymore (and it is going to Nov 8th). And even worse if the Republicans actually take the House and Senate. I watch NCAA college football (go Georgia!) to take my mind off the awfulness of Joe Biden and his attempted destruction of the US.
Biden is George Soros with nice teeth.
Only sports I watch are fishing and MMA. Unwoke.
I ask anyone I see wearing Nike sneakers if they are “Nike Kneelers” and if they came with knee pads as well....
To anesthetize us to what the propaganda at least tells us is a hopeless worldwide situation.
I disagree.
We are in a time of extreme use of word valence. It’s how corporations attract “clicks”, attention, and ultimately money. If the “extreme” words trigger your brain (from either direction) it can influence your thinking.
The US, for the most part, is not in threat of collapse or hordes of police coming to haul us off to camps. If I go outdoors and look around my neighborhood, my town, my county….things are fine.
Don’t mistake my impression for apathy. We need to make changes in our leadership and the economic direction we find ourselves in. But the US has been good at periodic course corrections. We are not a suicidal people.
Yeah people are finally clocked into the Olympic scam. It’s unfortunate that the Olympics are a scam. Conceptually it’s cool. As an event it’s pretty cool. But they really need to pay their own freight.
Conservatives are like other humans. They like to beat their chest and virtue signal like libs.
Then they do what feels good, not willing to do real sacrifice. Be honest with yourselves.
I lost interest in the NFL starting 20 years or so ago. By 15 years ago even Fantasy Football could not keep me interested in the NFL and I haven’t watched a minute since - yes even Super Bowls.
In fact, I don’t watch any pro sports.
I’m still a huge college football fan and somewhat of a college baseball fan, but that’s it.
Yes. Getting my Sundays back was really great. I can go hiking or get errands done or whatever. I don’t miss it one bit.
Sometimes do watch the truck part of the Dakar Rally though.
“Wokeness has no place anywhere.”
I’m attending a Thinkers and Drinkers Meetup on Wednesday. The topic is Wokeness. I will be the only Conservative there. This is going to be fun.
