Day 537: 15 Aug Ukrainians FINALLY CROSS THE RIVER AND TAKE CONTROL OF KEY BRIDGEHEADS | Ukraine War Update
The war between Ukraine and Russia is locked on the southern front lines. Kiev continues to pursue its offensive plans currently along the Dnirpo River. Most recently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out an incredible landing operation in this region. Ukrainian forces landed seven boats, each carrying about six to seven soldiers, on the shore of the Kozachi Laheri settlement, and then crossed the Russian defensive line there. After this striking operation, the Ukrainian defense lines advanced to a depth of 800 meters. A pro-Russian milbloggers reported that this raid has caused some inevitable and extremely painful problems for Russian forces. However, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar kept her mouth shut, saying she did not confirm the information about the raid in Dnipro.
While the Ukrainian authorities did not make an official comment on the raid for a certain period of time, the Ministry of Defense confirmed that the day before the raid, Ukrainian special forces units were operating in the area. After these statements, the fighters of the Shaman Battalion, a special-purpose unit under the Defense Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, were advancing deep into the occupied areas and the Russians continued to suffer losses. These forces were previously referred to as demons by pro-Russian milbloggers. A pro-Ukrainian milblogger Telegram channel posted photos showing allegedly seized Russian equipment and Russian prisoners of war from the raid. Following the release of these stunning photos, Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance teams reportedly crossed the Konka River under a cloud of smoke to hide their movements. Later, information began to appear that Ukrainian troops appeared on the islands. In fact, the landing at Kozachi Laheri was the next step in the offensive.
First of all, the Kherson aspect was promising for Ukraine in terms of solving these problems. But the Russians blew up the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, as it was a very important connecting corridor for the Ukrainian troops. Therefore, for some time the attack on this part of the front was impossible. Kiev, on the other hand, took the next step of the main offensive operation and ordered the landing of 7 Ukrainian boats Dnipro at Kozachi Laher instead of directly in the direction of Kherson. The landing operation, which was carried out as a result of this decision, also opened the lock on this front line for the Ukrainians. The Ukrainians were thus able to capture a series of beachheads on the left bank of the river in the Kherson region.
Kozachi Laheri is in the Kherson region, on the Russian-occupied left bank of the Dnipro River, the main tributary of Ukraine. This settlement is about 3 kilometers inland from Dnipro and just south of the Konka River, which runs parallel to Dnipro. With the change of natural conditions in the critical settlement of Kozachi Laheri, the Ukrainians were able to act secretly here by boat. And these natural factors contributed to the solution of problems of an annoying nature. Ukrainian troops also successfully used all these positive improvements in the landing operation in Dnipro. The village had about 3,700 residents. However, some of the residents of this settlement were evacuated after the Russian forces blew up the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant on June 6, 2023.
The village had been occupied by Russian forces since February 24, 2022. In Ukrainian, the town’s name translates as Cossack Camps, reflecting the region’s historical ties to Ukraine’s 17th and 18th century independence movements. As a result of the actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces on Kozachi Laheri, which is full of symbolic and strategic value, the Russian forces in that sector had to leave the settlement and the nearest forts. In other words, as a result of the Ukrainian landing operations and ground attacks in Kozachi Laheri, the Russian land connection corridor on the left bank of Dnipro was cut. However, this was not a new element of the attack, but a continuation. Because, according to the latest information, the left bank positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stretched from Antonivka Bridge to Oleshki.
This critical area was southwest of Kozachi Laheri. Ukrainian forces were stationed on the left bank of the Dnipro, on the Antonivka Bridge close to Kherson City, an area where Russian shelling had been trying to displace them for a month. And because the Ukrainian troops broke through the Russian defense lines in Kozachi, they had a broad perspective in the critical areas southwest of this city, between Antonivka and Oleshky.

During the day, the Russian occupants launched 42 missiles and 44 air strikes and fired 24 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of our troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, the Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties, including children. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have been destroyed. In the MARINKA direction, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the Russian offensive in the area of Mariinka and Krasnohorivka in the Donetsk region. The enemy conducted an air strike near Krasnohorivka in the Donetsk region. More than 10 localities came under artillery fire, including Oleksandropil, Mariinka, Novomykhailivka, Katerynivka, and Yelizavetivka in the Donetsk region.

More than 10 localities came under artillery fire, including Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Velyka Novosilka, Blahodatne, Staromayorske, and Rivne in the Donetsk region.
In the ZAPORIZHZHIA direction, the enemy conducted air strikes in the areas of Omelnyk, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhya region. More than 20 settlements suffered from enemy artillery shelling, including Novodarivka, Poltavka, Zaliznychne, Charivne, Novoandriivka, and Stepove in Zaporizhzhia region.
In the KHERSON direction, the enemy conducted air strikes in the areas of Mykolayivka and Sadove in the Kherson region. Such localities as Kherson, Poniativka in Kherson region and Ochakiv in Mykolaiv region came under enemy artillery fire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited on Tuesday (August 15) the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia and met troops fighting in the counteroffensive against Russian forces in the south. Zelenskiy was shown in a video with senior Ukrainian soldiers examining a battlefield map at what the president’s office said was the frontline command point of the 46th separate airmobile brigade near the town of Orikhiv.
Ukraine launched a counter-offensive against Russian forces in the south and southeast at the start of June, hoping to cut Russian forces in half by advancing south towards the Sea of Azov. More than two months into the operation, Kyiv has retaken a string of villages but no major settlements, acknowledging that its progress has been slower than desired because of prepared Russian defenses and what it says is a shortage of weapons.

Will the Abrams Tank Face a Similar Fate to the Leopard Tank in Ukraine?
After the US officials had been initially reluctant to send M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, the US then declared it would send 31 of the 70-ton Abrams main battle tanks, while Germany committed to sending 14 Leopard 2 tanks.
According to Konstantin Sivkov, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences, the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 tanks that the West intends to provide to Ukraine will be ineffective in the region without adequate protection. In an interview with the Turkish newspaper Aydinlik, he emphasized that while these tanks are powerful vehicles, their effectiveness is dependent on being backed by fighter jets, robust defense, and artillery support. Sivkov also pointed out that the Leopard tanks have previously encountered issues in Syria. Also, it was recently reported that the Leopard 2 was successfully destroyed by Russia’s Lancet system.
Given that Russia’s loitering munition has achieved its initial victory over a heavily praised Leopard 2 tank which has been hailed as a wonder weapon by the media, some questions come to mind: Will the American Abrams tank suffer the same fate as the destroyed Leopard 2? Ukraine’s Armed Forces use thermal imagers to find Russian mines

CNN reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are using experimental thermal imaging devices to uncover Russian mines.

DETAILS: A CNN journalist saw Ukrainian soldiers on the front installing a thermal imaging camera on a commercial drone at dusk. The camera hovers over Russian minefields and detects dozens of thermal signatures [traces]. Some of them are craters, but many of them are mines barely hidden under the surface.
The heat that the mines receive from the bright summer sun during the day is retained as the sun goes down, making them more clearly visible on the thermal imaging camera.
Soldiers from the 15th Separate National Guard Regiment stationed near the embattled village of Robotyne told CNN that the tactic is an effective means of detecting some mines.
CNN footage shows the mines being detonated by Ukrainian charges, which detonate and at least partially eliminate the threat.

This is yet another example of Ukrainian soldiers’ ingenuity supplementing the armour and weapons provided by NATO countries in recent months to help in the counteroffensive, CNN said.
Paul McCann, a spokesman for The HALO Trust, a UK-based mine clearance NGO, told CNN that its mine clearance experts have used this method in Angola, where it has proven to be promising. He said that the mines’ thermal signatures are more clearly visible at dawn and dusk, when they contrast more with the outside temperature.
CNN reported that Ukrainian soldiers often use drones with thermal imaging cameras, but the scale of the task is enormous: according to official Ukrainian estimates, Russian forces rigged more than 180,000 square kilometres with explosives, and there are often up to five explosive devices per square metre.
A drone team on a frontline position near the village of Robotyne told CNN the area around them was laden with mines.
Oleksandr from the 15th National Guard Regiment said: “When we entered one forest area, we found up to 53 booby traps. They’re not just made of one grenade – we call it a bouquet, grenades full of other grenades.”
