YouTube test threatens to block viewers if they continue using ad blockers
Engadget ^ | 6/30/2023 | Mariella Moon

The experiment is meant to urge users to disable their ad blockers or subscribe to YouTube Premium.

YouTube is looking to take a more aggressive approach in preventing viewers from using ad blockers while watching videos on its platform. As BleepingComputer reports, people have been posting screenshots on social networks like Reddit that show a pop-up notice warning them that their player will be blocked after three videos.

The warning says YouTube will block their ability to play videos on the platform unless they disable their ad blocker or add the website to their white list. "Ads allow YouTube to stay free for billions of users worldwide," the notice continues. To go ad-free, the company tells users to get a YouTube Premium subscription so "creators can still get paid." Prior to these warnings, YouTube only showed popups to ad blocker users, reminding them that it's against the website's TOS. Eventually, it added a timer to the notices to ensure viewers take the time to read them.

The website has confirmed to BleepingComputer that the new alerts are part of an experiment. A spokesperson told the publication that YouTube is "running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium." They said that YouTube might temporarily disable playback "[i]n extreme cases, where viewers continue their use of ad blockers." The spokesperson added that they will only disable playback "if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube," though it's unclear if that means YouTube won't automatically block playback after a viewer watches three videos and will give them more opportunities to comply.

At the moment, this new approach only affects a small number of users, and YouTube didn't say how many people and regions are part of the test. The website, which makes most of its money from ads, has seen its ad revenue decline over the past three quarters, so we won't be surprised if this test expands to more users around the world should it turn out to be effective.

I got a video downloader on my computer, so that’s not an issue. It’s YT wanting me to watch a gazillion ads before I ever get TO the video in the first place! :-)

This notification happened to me about 5 mins ago. I did disable my adblocker, but may choose another venue soon.

Apparently YT is targeting just a few accounts (yeah right) so even though I have no content posted there myself, because I log in using my Google account I’ve been targeted. I’m gonna start using Brave more than the chromium browser I have been using (Slimjet) because I think the developers have stopped updating it, but if YT decides to roll out this censorship enmasse then everyone who browses YT will be affected if they use an ad blocker, which I think most of us utilize.

i use Brave. I do not have an account or log in. I saw the warning today for the first time. I will do the same thing as I do on X. Leave the site. FYT. I can live without their videos.

Well for those with an account then just log out and clear cookies if neccisary. Or just use a 2nd browser that is not logged in.

I use the Brave browser and haven’t received any popups or notifications about it yet. But for 2-3 days last week when using Brave they removed the controls for screen size and video speed ect. But it was restored after that and I continue to use Brave. I can’t stand using other browsers there because it seems like every 5 minutes they insert a commercial.

Oh yes! I will subscribe to premium YouTube because they censor certain content providers because they aren’t “woke” or they do not agree with Fauci/Big Pharma heavy handedness or they support the Second Amendment or support the Jan6 violin insurrectionists. I absolutely want to use my shrinking disposable monies to support commies like YT.

re: ad blockers are theft.

Brainwashing ads cause so much anxiety people are having to get a prescription for adblock from their doctors.

AdBlock and support content creators by buying their merch.

I will probably do the same thing if YT presses the issue, but I'm hoping there will be such a backlash that Google will back off.

But yeah, there are other websites, mainly conservative new sites that have blocked me cuz I got an ad blocker, and I just deleted the bookmark and never looked back, so if I'm forced to leave YT, so be it.

But I'm hoping that someone out in Freeper Land will be able point us to something that will block YT's blocking attempt. :-) I cc'd ShadowAce on a previous post, I hope he sees it.

“LET US ABUSE YOU OR YOU WON’T GET ABUSED BY US ANYMORE!!!”

In other words, Ad Blockers work.

I think advertisers are suckers for the most part. Advertising works but not when the advertisements are lost in a sea of noise.

YouTube sells ads through third-party ad companies. Those companies sell ads by lying their asses off to companies that buy ads. They never tell the companies that their add will be lost in a sea of 10,000 other ads including those of their competitors.

The average person on the Internet sees more than 10,000 ads a day. How in the world will someone remember any specific ad? They don’t. Most users never can tell what ads they have seen.

Companies using ads also fail to understand that beating their customers into submission is for the mob and doesn’t work. “Watch you ad or you don’t get to see our content!!! Got it, Buddy??!! Buy something, you jerk!!! Watch our ads and buy something!!!”

They fail to realize the content a user wants is usually available elsewhere. Very little on the Internet is unique.

Stop wasting your time and bandwidth watching videos from any source. You get 10x the information per minute by reading. Video is for illiterates.

Amen! 20 minutes of blather for 30 seconds of actual information, and more often than not, that information doesn't actually answer the question in the title teaser.

If hearing and seeing a blind dude play that doesn’t inspire you, nothing will.

All I know is watching Khatia Buniatishvili play piano inspires me.

I’ve been using Brave for years.
Just started getting the warnings on YT yesterday.
I just hit F5, and it goes away.
Hope YT doesn’t find a workaround for this.

“Ad blockers are theft.”

Ads are theft.
Ads steal my bandwidth that I pay for.
Ads steal my screen space when I didn’t ask for them.
Ads spy on us, stealing our personal information everywhere we go on the Internet.
Ads steal my processor, memory, and storage space.
Ads are theft, which is why people instinctively hate them.

The problem many sites have is that people often dont really care if they see the content or not. I wont sit through an ad longer than 15 seconds for any site (only because it takes a while to navigate, and if the ad is done...I am ok, nor will i disable my ad blocker, nor will i pay to read a single article. I just move on. I suspect most people do the same.

“Online add-supported” business models are free to keep trying. But most folks simply dont care enough to let their time be wasted.

>> I just won’t go there anymore, but this, again, censorship at its tyrannical worst.

That is indeed the primary problem with Google. And although the ads are annoying and intrusive, the commercial aspects make sense — actually for any site.

For sites that intolerantly block when ad blocked, I’ll immediately leave the site.
