Patriot was backfill for the Ukrainian S300 as strategic air defense against saturation cruise missile attack. Protecting the backfield IS critical. Ukraine expended most of their S300 doing that.
Recent western additions to Patriot batteries seems to have freed up a battery, or part of one, for operational use.
