If you have high blood pressure, your partner probably does, too — and it’s your fault

New research in the Journal of the American Heart Association from Columbia and partnering universities found an uncanny connection between couples and high blood pressure.

“Many people know that high blood pressure is common in middle-aged and older adults, yet we were surprised to find that among many older couples, both husband and wife had high blood pressure in the U.S., England, China and India,” said senior study author Chihua Li. “For instance, in the U.S., among more than 35% of couples who were ages 50 or older, both had high blood pressure.”

In total, about 38% of U.S. spouses share high blood pressure; an estimated 47% in England do as well. Chinese married couples saw a 21% connection and Indian ones saw 20%.

I’m not going to do this right now but if you look at the percent of people in this country with high BP and the the percentage of couples with high blood pressure you’ll get just about what you expect.

Not here. He wanted to cook for himself because I “was making him fat.” So for 18 years that has been the case. HE is the one with high blood pressure. Mine is great.

and it’s your fault

Is that directed at me or her? How do which one has it and which one caused the other to have it too?

HE is the one with high blood pressure. Mine is great.

I have high blood pressure. My wife has LOW blood pressure. Not normal . . . LOW. I wish there were a way I could siphon some of mine off to her.

Mine came when I had to take a marginal job with a 96 mile commute.

High blood pressure is like insanity. It’s genetic. You get it from your kids.

Nasty commute! Wow!

Mine used to be low, but that was due to lack of water intake.

Do you exercise a lot? Keep weight down? Low-stress life? What’s your secret?

Try. Sometimes. No.

It's genes, I guess, which is odd because my dad had high BP his whole life.

And even when I was pregnant and weighed more than I do not, it wouldn't budge. No idea why.

Good for you! Nothing like having the right parents, even though dad had high BP. How weird is that?

My grandmother had glaucoma and her two sons inherited it (including my dad). Grandma and one son went blind from it in their 90s. My dad passed in his mid 70s. So far, I don’t have any sign of it (I’m 72). Could be genetics — my dad’s side was from Germany and Poland. My mom came from English stock.
