Texas National Guard seizes key border crossing point, blocks Feds

The Border Patrol Union lauded Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott's actions, saying he "is not harming Border Patrol operations, he is enhancing them."

The Texas National Guard has seized control of city property in a key border crossing point and is restricting access by the Border Patrol, the Texas Military Department said in a statement obtained by Fox News's Bill Melugin.

The move comes amid myriad legal battles between Texas and the federal government over Operation Lone Star, Austin's unilateral effort to secure its border Mexico amid perceived apathy from the federal government and an unprecedented surge in illegal crossings.

The Border Patrol Union lauded Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott's actions, saying he "is not harming Border Patrol operations, he is enhancing them. His seizing control of Shelby Park allows our agents to deploy to troubled spots that experience high numbers of gotaways. Governor Abbott’s actions should be seen as a force multiplier."

Abbott in late December, signed a law making illegal entry into Texas a state crime and permitting authorities to arrest illegal immigrants and state judges to order their deportation. The state has also quarreled with Washington over its installation of a buoy barrier in the river and the installation of razor war along the shore.

"The Texas National Guard has maintained a presence with security points and temporary barrier in Shelby Park since 2021. The current posture is to prepare for future illegal immigrant surges and to restrict access to organizations that perpetuate illegal immigrant crossings in the park and greater Eagle Pass area," they told the outlet.

"Texas will continue to deploy Texas National Guard soldiers, DPS troopers, and more barriers, utilizing every tool and strategy to respond to President Biden’s ongoing border crisis," Abbott spokeswoman Renae Eze told the New York Post.

“I think that the AG should be issuing arrest warrants for everyone involved in the coordination of the illegal invasion.”

I’ve been saying that for months. Have the Texas Rangers arrest anyone who so much as touches State property. That includes BP agents. Let them sit in lockup over a weekend.

I will argue that the arrest warrants must be issued by the original organization charged with the duty for protecting Texans from the criminals crossing the border. That organization is the Texas Rangers.

Taking your suggestion at face value, the Texas Rangers should deputize all the National Guard and transform them into law enforcement officers.

Good. The Feds have had years to enforce the law. Instead have acted illegally.

Amen

Except before the indictments, there must be detentions with those being detained subject to being shown in their pajamas at the time of their arrest

“Didn’t Trump get sued and lose for trying to withhold Fed money unless a state did something.”

Wouldn’t matter. There is now a double standard and different rules for their side than our side.

The Biden admin position is that, because it is a federal crime to cross the border illegally, it can’t also be a state crime, ignoring the entire concept of double sovereignty used to prosecute people for federal crimes in the event of acquittal of state crime (and vice versa).

Taken to its logical extreme, it’s a federal crime to shoot an FBI agent or rob a bank. It’s also murder or armed robbery. By this stupid logic, the local police should let the murderer or robber run by because it’s a federal crime.

“What will Texas do when, privately, Deep State tells Texas pols that Deep State will pull all federal funding from Texas unless Texas complies.”

You nailed it. The states have become so reliant on the fed that they simply won’t do what’s really needed, until it’s too late. They don’t want to give up all that money. It’s always about power and money. Everything you see is “bread and circuses”.

You are far kinder than I am. I would throw anyone interfering with real border enforcement into the general population with the worst of the worst illegal alien prisoners. I would use legal delays for their bail that would rival the J6 prisoner treatment.

Will the Feds violate their own stupid Posse Comitatus rule? They will have to if they send the military to the Texas border. Or will it be the FBI and another Waco/Ruby Ridge incident?

Hopefully they’ll make the illegals change their own diapers

Then they can go to DC and put the same protocol in place for Joe Biden.

Take a good, hard look at the Texas budget.

Texas hasn’t planned for this threat.

And hasn’t had an honest conversation with Texas citizens about what has to be done if federal funding is yanked.

For a NYer, you seem highly concerned about Texas’ budget :)

Maybe you’re planning to move here, from NY?

TX only “relies” on fed funding, for less than 30% of our budget.

Most of that is allocated to pay for welfare programs, health and human services, etc.

HOWEVER ... we have a surplus, due to our robust economic health...

...It also includes a historic $32.7 billion in state dollars expected to be left over in Texas coffers from the 2022-23 biennium, thanks to “vigorous economic growth,” gas prices, inflation and other factors in the past 18 months, he said. All but $10 billion, which is reserved for highway funds and the state’s rainy day fund, is available for general spending, Hegar said....

https://www.texastribune.org/2023/01/09/texas-budget-revenue-estimate/

...That leaves the spending plan well below the constitutional requirement that lawmakers spend less than the $188 million available to them. And at a 10.5% increase in tax spending over the current cycle, the budget comes in well under the state’s constitutional and statutory caps on spending increases that state leaders set at 12.3%.

The House passed the budget 124-22. Senators approved it 29-2....

https://www.texastribune.org/2023/06/07/texas-budget-balanced/

Again....why are you so concerned about what Texas has/hasn’t planned for?

Be ready. They are going to have to set a strong example of some sort. Or other states will consider doing the same. Including northern states.

Posse Comitatos Rule stupid? Au contraire mon frere. Posse Comitatos keeps Feds from turning its military on civilians. Keeps Feds from using military force for law enforcement activities against civilians.
