The SIlent Radio: A Third Year WIthout Rush
American Thinker ^ | 17 Feb, 2024 | Peter Nichols

Rush Limbaugh is gone, but life is possible, and victory is possible. America is worth fighting for, and we are worth fighting for as well.

A third year has passed since the death of Rush Limbaugh. The day of the sad news, millions of people were sensible of a loss. Something they depended on for reassurance, reinforcement, confidence, strength, amusement, and interest was now gone and never would come again.

Limbaugh was an optimist, and optimists are like bonfires. The shivering gathered about him for warmth -- those fearing an awful and incomprehensible transformation in their country, those to whom the triumph of Marxism looked to be inevitable. His listeners had this consolation -- that at the appointed hour the ebullient voice would issue from the radio, and for a time they would be in the company of a friend, who saw what they saw but had it all figured out and was himself unafraid.

Naturally, the leftist bullies hated him for ridiculing their piffle, but above all because he was dauntless. And he made others so, as did Donald Trump.

Intellectuals who fancy themselves conservatives, but of such refinement and probity as to join occasionally with the liberals also shunned him. They could scarcely play the role they coveted while acknowledging such a man as Rush Limbaugh to be a leader of the conservative movement, a man who spoke to and in the voice of the Republican base. It was the respect of educated liberals and not the hooting of the rabble that was to be garnered, thought those who would evolve into the “never-Trumpers.”

But doing justice to Limbaugh’s nominally conservative antagonists, their enmity also sprang from matters more interesting than snobbery. They thought themselves possessed of a certain moderation -- they sometimes called themselves “moderates,”

I often wonder what Rush would say about the state of our country today.

From his rise to fame in the 1990s to his death, Rush Limbaugh served much as William Buckley did in his heyday. Both anchored the right end of “acceptable” conservative opinion. They held the conservative electorate within the bounds of the conservative vs. liberal framework. The rise of blogging and podcasts and the bypasses that the alt-right media did around Big Tech censorship have broken the old bounds that Conservatism, Inc. placed on the right wing. You now have Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones, Joe Rogan, and Elon Musk as the dominant voices as Fox and traditional AM radio talkers decline.

I first heard Jeff years ago subbing for Michael Savage. I sometimes try to stream his morning broadcast online but the websites I get it from usually crap out and I have to restart the stream over and over. I’m in Kentucky so over air radio is not an option.

Just came across this on his wikipedia page:

“During the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Limbaugh asserted that the virus was the common cold.[212] Limbaugh said on his radio show on February 24, 2020, “I’m dead right on this. The coronavirus is the common cold, folks,” alleging it was being “weaponized” to bring down Trump.[213] Limbaugh’s statement was called “wildly irresponsible” by The Washington Post.[214]”

He was right until the very end.

I’m just glad Rush didn’t live to see an America completely prostrate in the sewer at the feet of the totalitarian globohomos.

Good morning to you I decided to come out of Lurkdom to respond to this article. I really miss Rush so very much 30 year listener. It’s just such a void that nothing can fill it up even if you think there are substitutes I always try to think. What would he say about XYZ, there’s so much that in the past three years has been missed Rush passed away about two months after my dad did. My father lived with pancreatic cancer for over five years he was in his mid 80s when he passed away. Keep this in mind no surgery no treatment, and he lived much longer than they thought he was going to live , I also sometimes wonder how the rest of the staff is doing cookie Snerdley I know Snerdley was on temporarily had some program on for a short time, but I really didn’t catch much of it. I’m sorry to ramble. I also want to tell you that free Republic has helped me get through some long nights when I couldn’t sleep after I first retired , I love free Republic. You guys are so clever at times really kept me laughing. The insomnia is over and I’m sleeping very well thank you one more thing it seems like we forgot we used to pray a lot for this nation back in 2016 when Trump was running. I never hear people say this, but let’s pray again I cannot document, how many times it works one way or another let’s pray to God

I’ve thought from the beginning that God took Rush so he would not have to witness the destruction of our country. There will never be another like him.

Doesn’t matter. Apathetic and lazy conservatives won’t fight. They prefer the easy out. They huddle in the center of the arena and wait for the lions to eat them up.

Re: Obama’s natural-born citizenship

Rush deeply disappointed me. As much as I enjoyed his programing, I never trusted him after that.

He also ignored the largest threat to our republic: government schooling on every level. It wasn’t until he was terminal that he mentioned it.

Re: “acceptable” conservativism

Yes, indeed! Rush never went beyond those bounds.

Pray for the country is something that most FReepers still do, but we need the reminder to pray and not to curse.

Thank you!

His wit and wisdom is still the best. I re-read his old books and it’s so prophetic. Conservatism today is rudderless. Freerepublic.com is evidence of this.

“Rush deeply disappointed me.”

In a way, I am disappointed in that he didn’t seem to do more to establish a strong ubiquitous legacy for after he was gone. It’s almost like he went “poof!” and two months later it’s like he never was. I’m not sure what, but maybe a kick-ass media outlet, a foundation, etc. (I’m just rambling, I know.) I still have his books.
