So I'm sitting at SeaTac airport. By my count there are no less than 8 people within earshot loudly playing videos, video chats, or in 1 case having a conversation over speakerphone.
It's obnoxious. A bunch of noise I don't want.
The interesting thing to me, and this holds with observations I've made over the last couple years, is this:
every single person doing this is over 50 years of age.
There are plenty of younger people playing videos, music, making phone calls, etc, but they're all using headphones.
So what happened? I'm in my thirties, and I'm pretty sure if I'd done the same thing 5 years ago, I'd get publicly shamed by one of my elders. I'm also pretty sure if this was 5 years ago it'd be people my age and younger that were the offenders. But now, things have totally inevrted, and all those same elders who would've shamed me are blasting audio at "I'm old and deaf" levels.
Didn't this used to be considered rude?
I am just having fun.
I am from Snohomish.
Currently somewhere in the SE, maybe Charlotte.
It is a good 30 miles to the airport offsite parking.
I’m 61. Had a pair of Bluetooth ear buds and hated them. Back to the $10 wired ones for me. I knew how to use them but they just weren’t convenient.
Costco now sells hearing aids for @ $ 1,600.00/pair.
An alternative to hearing aids is hearing assist headphones (sound amplification headphones).
They probably have hearing aids stuck in their ears grouchy young man
Usually it’s people speaking spanish or another foreign language doing this in restaurants / stores etc.
“It’s the on-going coarsening of American society“
Similar to so many of today’s dog owners constantly forcing their disgusting animals on the rest of us everywhere where that was (and many cases still is) not allowed: grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, hotels, airplanes, shopping malls, parks, gyms, movie theaters, cruise ships, etc etc etc
Nobody wants to listen to your YouTube videos. Nobody wants to step in your dog’s urine and feces.
They have iPhones and they lost their earpods because Apple got rid of the plug for wired headphones and the earpods fell out, so the only way they can hear their cat videos is with their phone on speaker.
I read FR...Anytime I have to wait, or study my “file cabinet” on Pinterest, and make meal plans, garden plans..
So you’re going to be one of those “GET OFF MY LAWN!!” guys when you get a little older, aren’t you?
SeaTac........I think I see your problem..........
Try to think of your cell phone the way they do. It’s way more than just a portable phone. It’s a portable computer, a portable camera, and a portable video system. These are actually amazing devices.
I understand that you don’t view it the way they do, but they use their “phones” for many more things than just talking with someone.
“What happened?”
You became your grandfather. Buy a pair of nrr 30 ear plugs. Cost $2.
You need to watch the Joey B Toonz Youtube channel for some social commentary on the younger generation. Although it applies to some of the older ones too.

I’ve been around enough where I’m now, outside of a few reconnaissance and supply missions, happy staying around the compound.
To me it's a phone for making calls. That's all I use it for. Anything else I need to do, can be done on my laptop, once I get home. I don't do any social media sites. FR and patriots.win are the only two sites I contribute to, and I'm not compelled to access them sitting in the doctor's office, or anywhere else. If I know I'm going to have to sit and wait for a while anywhere, I'll take a book with me to read. I'm old, and set in my ways. I still remember when you had to ask the operator to connect you to a certain phone number. At least back then, when you called someone you got to talk to a real person, and didn't have to sit on the phone listening to a recording, or to an automatic response system that can't understand what you're saying, nor tell you if you want to listen to this message in spanish, please press 5.
“We are crumbling, and the 55-year old obnoxious person next to you is just as much to blame as the Antifa lunatics.”
I tend to agree with that statement.
I’m a bit younger than you, but I get what you’re saying. I was just trying to explain what the younguns do with their phones. I’m not on social media either. Ok, I have an account on FB, but I don’t post anything, and hardly ever look at it.
There are gadgets you can get to help you hear the television without turning it up loud. Look up ‘TV Ears’ on Amazon.
These are the same kind of air traveler who decides to crank their seat all the way back, so that the chair lies flat at almost 180’. So what if you wind up with your head virtually in someone’s lap?
(having a conversation over speakerphone.)
Can’t tell you how many idiots I pass that are doing just that
