The Garden Thread - April, 2024
April 1, 2024 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 04/01/2024 6:23:19 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

You are in Hardiness Zone 7, so Sweet (Winter) Daphne should be very happy at your place! Deer and rabbits avoid it. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal for planting. If you have any Hydrangea, treat them the same as far as location goes. Yes, all parts of it are toxic, but I’m sure it tastes awful if animals avoid it, so I doubt kids or house pets would be interested in anything other than smelling the flowers.

Big things going on at The Crab Shack (a/k/a my place) in the past 2 weeks.

1. My blueberry bushes, which I’ve had in their containers since buying them 3 years ago and which have never done anything but put forth a couple of leaves, now have blossoms! Quite a few of them, too.

2. Several of the blossoms have dropped off already, revealing what looks for all the world like a tiny, tiny little blueberry, smaller than a BB right now.

My Sis is the green thumb in the family, and has always told me that blueberries and hydrangeas need to have something called an “acidifier” added every once in a while. Glad I listened to her for a change, and bought a bag. :-)

When I was a teenager working for the family business, I would sometimes complain about the pay (there wasn’t any), and my Dad would tell me he had already doubled my pay a few months back. My retort, “oh, that’s right!, well then why stop at doubling it? Maybe tripling it would get me to work harder.” He’d chuckle even though I was a bit of a smart @ss sometimes.

Good luck with the blueberries. I’m trying from seed. They went in some dirt last full moon. We’ll see what happens. Acidifier = coffee grounds.

Anyway, also in the dirt here in zone 10b:
Tomatoes
Gooseberries
Cayenne
Habenero
Strawberries (hopefully perennial ones).
Corn (my own cross between Silver queen and Peaches and Cream). Maybe try some popcorn for summer planting.
Ginger
Peanuts peanuts peanuts everywhere.
Sweet taters
Melons
Squash or Zucchini (I’m not sure which).
Sunflowers

On deck for tomorrow since I have to work on the new moon Monday:

Moar peppers
Moar tomatoes
Moar melons.
Prolly moar peanuts
Moar peppers
Collards
Cranberry hibiscus (more akin to okra than hibiscus)

Surinam cherry tree is doing great. I got about 1 1/2 pounds of them. So good.
Avacadoes are forming.
Mangoes are forming.
I thought my Mulberry tree was dead, but electroculture saved it.
Wasps have yet to find the fig tree, but they will soon.
Citrus trees have flowers and smell so good. I’m gonna try the aloe trick to clone some lemons and lime trees.

Don’t forget everyone Monday is a new moon and an optimal day for planting - especially with the eclipse.

Anarchy? Well at least they have almost every inch covered
with some plant. Looks like they have attained their goal.

Wow #1PAL, sounds like all ten fingers of yours are green, not just the one thumb. Iam way jealous. Heh. The yield is going to be spectacular.

Please do update from time to time on the progress of everything.

I can’t have that in my neighborhood, and unfortunately for me, that’s my sunniest spot.

Pollard; A link to to a retired Professor who collects and breeds different varieties of Northern Pecans. (For you and anyone else interested in putting a few pecan trees on the back of their property line!) A lot of the cultivars ar

e MO native.

Northern Pecan Cultivars

Shepherd, Oswego, Kanza look like good scab varieties. Not sure about commercial availability though. He sells scion wood, but is done for the year.

Quora discussion about pecans. With good care and a good location you could have pecans in 4-5 years.

Do not try to graft a pecan tree on hickory understock.

“Don’t forget everyone Monday is a new moon and an optimal day for planting - especially with the eclipse.”

Great reminder. Looks like my weather will be cooperating, so I can get a few things seeded. (Lettuces, Spinach, Radishes) I’m still nursing my tomatoes and peppers along INSIDE, but within another week or so they will be enjoying the greenhouse. :)

Started a flat of Marigolds today as well as Cosmos. Zinnia get started next week, then the summer squashes and zukes & cukes, then the winter squashes/pumpkins.

So HAPPY that Spring is finally here in Wisconsin! :)
