Pacific Grove Uses Birds of Prey to Prevent Seagulls From Nesting on Rooftops
KSBW ^ | Apr 8, 2024

The city of Pacific Grove began an abatement effort to keep seagulls from public places within the city by using birds of prey.

On Sunday, the city said they are using birds of prey to deter birds from "nesting on rooftops, rummaging through trash, littering, and leaving unwanted droppings."

This is an effort to minimize inconveniences for locals and tourists, said the city on a social media post. The city says falconers will be on patrol with Harris Hawks and other birds of prey in the coming weeks.

The city listed the following benefits for deterring seagulls from rooftops:

Keeps nesting birds from expensive rooftop equipment areas and HVAC units

Keeps rooftop clean from contaminants that could enter the storm drain

Reduces the need for rooftop cleaning

Gets rid of smells

Minimises bird noise

More information on Pacific Grove seagull determent can be found here.

LOL...not surprised.

The top of our chimney is WAY up there, 35’, maybe 40’ off the ground. You need to get on a ladder from the ridge to reach the top of the chimney.

I need bird spikes or a metal wire cage over the caps.

After years of beating on the two caps, I’m surprised there is anything left of them.

I’ve used a decoy coyote to keep deer out of the garden, but the same problem. The deer know it’s fake. It helps if I move it every couple of days.

No such thing as a seagull.

My wife even bought the ones with a head that spins around on a swivel.

The only animal that noticed it was the female Chihuahua. She barked at it as soon as she noticed it.

I have the same one, which reminds me to go write an amazon review on that worthless thing.

Sounds like it was a Kamala Harris hawk.

You can get more of them with 7.5 or 8 shot.

They gotta poop somewhere.

How will it stay out of the storm drain?

I wouldn't have traveled a city block for a Kamala Harris hawk. What we expected was the same kind of bird that does falconry demos at the Wild Animal Park (assuming those still occur at whatever the place is called now).

At the naval depot in Keyport the gulls rule and chase away the eagles. Nasty birds. They pull up clams from the mud flats and drop them on the pavement from a hundred feet.

If the falcons eat them they won’t be around to defecate anywhere.

Hmmmm. Better not let the falcons poop either. Or let the falcons leave any carcass remains. I think the seagull poop issue is just optics, quite visible.

You are probably right. They want to get rid of the gulls mainly for aesthetic reasons - can’t blame them — but they probably figure they need to work in the angle of helping the environment so the the lefty animal lovers go along with it.
