Being tailgated by a cop for going the speed limit
April 12, 2024

Posted on 04/12/2024 3:42:01 PM PDT by SamAdams76

One of my walking trails is right by the police station in Brookfield, CT. The parking lot for the police station abuts the parking lot for the walking trail (by the Still River which often floods into the trail).

Once in a while after a walk, I get in my car and leave the walking trail to head home and immediately a police vehicle, evidently going on shift, leaves their own parking lot and slides in behind me.

What to do in this situation?

The roads leading back home are in either 25mph or 30mph speed zones. Ridiculously low speed limits, especially when in good weather conditions, you can safely go 40-45mph.

When this happens, I immediately slow to the the posted speed limit. After a while, the cop gets impatient with me and starts to get right on my tail.

I keep waiting to get lit up because I know the cop is running my plate and looking to see if I have any outstanding warrants or such. Having a clean record, the cop is now looking for me to make any mistake at all. Maybe a "swerve" or a sudden braking.

Now I have my hands clenched to the wheel in the 10 and 2 o'clock position, studying my rear view as the cop gets right behind me, obviously irritated by my strict adherence to the posted speed limit.

I know that if I speed up just a little, say to 33mph in a 25, I will perhaps get lit up and pulled over for speeding. So I'm not taking that chance. But I know the cop behind me is super pissed that I'm going out of my way to stick to the speed limit. They want to pull me over so badly.

I hate these situations. Sometimes the cop will light up and just pass me out of sheer exasperation with my slow driving. They have that right. I obviously don't.

In some states (NJ being one of them), meticulously adhering to the speed limit raises suspicion; you’re likely to be tailed by a LEO who is pretty sure that you’re hiding something and wants a reason to stop you.

Years ago, I had a tailgating cop, who pulled me over. He said he could pull me over for anything. He then told me he didn’t like my bumper stickers. Cop gave me tickets or anything besides a political lecture.

I was rear ended by a cop once. He whipped around me and took off.

This has happened to me once a blue moon, or actually a couple. I’ve never gotten a speeding or traffic ticket of any kind, though I have had 2 warnings in my life. One was for a taillight that was out when I was stopped at a train crossing, and the cop was behind me for the duration of the train passing.

The other time I made a U turn at a light to go get gas when I was on empty. Who knew that U turns were illegal unless it was posted that they were allowed? I had no idea, but learned new rules in Columbus, Ohio that day.

Many, many moons ago I was I a similar situation with a little different twist. I was on my way home and still had quite a few miles to go, the speed limit was 55 mph. I was moving right along and in a distance I seen a state trooper entering from a side road. Of course I slowed down and followed in a very respectful distance. It so happened the trooper speeded up quite a bit and since I was trying to make some time I increased my speed as well.

But always keeping an eye on the car in front of me, again in a very respectful distance, far enough so there was no way the trooper could visually get a good description of my car. As we were getting close to the town which was my destination, I figured that most likely the trooper would call ahead alerting some local cop to wait for me at the town’s edge.

As mentioned several miles before getting to the town’s edge I slowed down below the speed limit and when I got to the city limits I just came crawling along, and sure enough there was a city cop sitting there, but nothing happened. I just smiled and went on…

You need to get involved in local politics and get your elected officials to rein that in.

“My inclination is the opposite. If someone is 4” off, I assume he is determined to hit me, so I slow down. No brakes, just foot off the gas. (I might tap the brake if rolling downhill).”

I do that, too, normally. But I honestly think that had I slowed down at all he would have hit me. I was not willing to risk that hassle and damage to my truck.

In that era, I always attributed the very high speeds on the highways in North Atlanta to Southern Stock Car heritage combined with modern German yuppiemobiles. There were a lot of BMWs, MBs and Audis on the roads, back then and now. BMW had a regional office in Sandy Springs back then, Road Atlanta was a big deal as well as Hampton, Porsche Cars North America was in Sandy Springs from perhaps the mid-90s until around 2015 (now by the airport), and of course now MB USA is in Sandy Springs.

When I used to drive fast cars, they would do this for miles.

Assholes. Only underlined my dislike of polices.

Speedometers in all the cars I have had, and it has been a bunch, have showed 1-3 mph faster than actual speed on he road. I suppose that is a safety thing.

Now if a cop gets behind me I go exactly 5 miles an hour under the speed limit.

Yep.

I start at the speed limit and drop 1 mph every 15 seconds.

Generally the power tripping cop can only take it for about a minute.

Started one at 35 and was down to 18 when the cop popped.

I looked at him and smiled as he blew by... right into my dashcam field of view.

All that time he sweated in the gym didn't amount to crap against a little thinking.

.

I figured as much. Brookfield would not have their men going around in 13 year old vehicles. Besides, there is so much extra gear required in a modern cop operation more room is needed for electronics and batteries. Few RWD non-luxury full-sized cars made today, I think the Charger was the last one. So everything is SUV now. Ugh.

Totally dark, but I knew he was a police car by the confident, or perhaps arrogant way he zoomed up behind me and then stayed right on my bumper, really close.
= = =

One dark night, on a lonely long wind road, a pickup truck was following me.

Then it turned off somewhere or something.

This is a 55 road, and curvy so I stayed on 55.

Minutes later, I tapped my brakes for a curve, and his bumper lit up and reflected my brake lights.

He stayed back there a while, all lights off.

I forgot what happened, I was kind of scared. I think he finally turned on his headlights and passed. A new pickup, no sigh of being a cop.

But somehow he had all his running lights off. In a new pickkup.

I have never figured this one out.
