'Rust' movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed to be sentenced in New Mexico court

"Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will be sentenced in a Santa Fe, New Mexico, court Monday for the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month.

Prosecutors are seeking the maximum penalty of 18 months in state prison.

Following Gutierrez-Reed's conviction, the judge ordered the 26-year-old to be held in police custody pending her sentencing. She was found not guilty of tampering with evidence.

In recorded jail phone conversations with her mother, boyfriend and her attorney’s paralegal, Gutierrez-Reed called jurors “idiots” and “a--holes” while complaining about the length of time it took them to deliberate, according to a recent filing by prosecutors.

Also in the phone calls, she said that she would not testify in actor Alec Baldwin’s upcoming criminal trial if subpoenaed and that she wants him to go to jail, too.

The almost two-week criminal trial centered on the shooting on the “Rust” film set in 2021, when Baldwin held a prop gun that fired a live round of ammunition, killing Hutchins, 42. The bullet also injured director Joel Souza.

During the prosecution’s closing arguments, special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey told the jury that Gutierrez-Reed “was negligent, she was careless, she was thoughtless.”

But Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney, Jason Bowles, said the prosecutors had not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for taking live rounds onto the set and alleged that Baldwin was ultimately responsible for Hutchins’ death.

He also doubled down, saying “What caused her to pass was Mr. Baldwin going off-script and pointing the weapon.”

Bowles added that “the only ultimate act is the pointing of that weapon. Ms. Gutierrez wasn’t in the church, she didn’t point that weapon, she didn’t pull it.”

Baldwin, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter, is set to stand trial in July.

This video shows Baldwin dominating everyone during a shooting scene.

The 30 minute video is about this but you can go to the 15:30 mark to catch the main part.

“Baldwin dominating everyone during a shooting scene”

That’s how this jackass gets his way.....always gotta be bullying somebody.

I saw much of her trial and enough on set video of him mishandling his firearm regularly.

There was testimony that the prop guns were, at times, used for live fire target price. This means other people were bringing live ammo on set and using it with the prop guns.

None of that makes any sense. Why would people who bought ammo not have their own weapons? Why would they want to use PROP GUNS on a movie set that they were not part of ? Even if they were some of the crew, again why use the studio's gun on movie set when not filming ?

What are the qualifications for an armorer ?

Our President is no more qualified for his job than Hannah G-R if we are going with your presumptive statement.

The prop manager had her rolling cigarettes..

Doesn't make sense unless they were props for the actors to use in the movie. I don't know if they even allow cigarettes to be used in a movie with such a 'woke' cast.

There was a lot of misinformation going around when this first happened. It is NOT an actor’s job to check a firearm.

But Baldwin wasn't just an actor. He was co-director/producer and had a background in firearms training and usage.

Which means he knew better than to point any weapon at a human, off script, regardless of whether it is loaded or not.

They were props for the actors...Hannah was doing two roles. The prop master was testifying...she was a b****...and you could tell she hated Hannah.

“It is NOT an actor’s job to check a firearm.”

BS, basic i.e. BASIC firearms safety is “Check your weapon”

Wrong. That’s how it works in the real world, but not on a Hollywood movie set. Again, there’s a reason why accidents like this are so rare. The rules are VERY strict. It is the armorer’s job (and his/her team), not the actor’s. What Baldwin did or didn’t do as far as handling the firearm AND if he intentionally cut corners by hiring a cheap armorer will be decided in court.

” It is NOT an actor’s job to check a firearm.” You Ma’am, are very wrong in that assumption. It may not be policy on a set, but if you are handed a real firearm, it’s your job to verify whether it’s loaded, or not, if you’re an actor, or a plumber, same thing applies.

First, I'm a Sir. Secondly, it is NOT the actor's job to check the firearm. It is the armorer's and his/her team. A Hollywood movie set is not the real world. In that world I agree completely with you about checking a firearm. But that doesn't apply on a movie set. The rules are very strict. These kinds of incidents almost never happen, and there's a reason why.

Basic rules of gun safety exclude the armorer. If a gun is pointed at someone and the trigger is pulled, then the guilty party is the one pulling the trigger. It’s each persons responsibility to know what if any rounds are in the weapon. It’s all on Baldwin. This is the one that should go to jail.

Elites get the free passes.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that.
Gun safety is every gun handler’s job. Everywhere, anywhere, all of the time. Hollywood is no exception.
This movie set is the sight of a murder. It’s every bit the real world, no matter how “special” the players think they are.

I forgot to add: “These kinds of incidents almost never happen”
I’d ask Ms. Hutchins if “almost” was good enough, but she was unavailable for comment.
The only reason this happened is because a loose cannon named Alec Baldwin was out of control.
Control of his movie set, his employees, and himself.
He should be sent to prison for murder.

You can disagree but that's how it works on a Hollywood set. No exceptions. There's a reason why things like this are so rare. Somebody in this case disregarded the rules. The armorer has been sentenced, next up will be Baldwin. We'll see if he gets the star treatment.

“Wrong. That’s how it works in the real world, but not on a Hollywood movie set.”

haha... Or to people who want to practice firearms whoopsie’s

Famous last words “it’s okay it’s not loaded”

“Check your weapons!” Capt Joe McVicar, USMC Force Battalion School (circa 1988) who would kick-your-ass over “Accidental Discharges” Outstanding school by the way.

I don’t doubt you on that being the way it is. I just see no reason, not one, for that to be standard operating procedure.
It’s like they’re too stubborn, or stupid, to take the extra step to prevent things like this from occurring.
Like I said, it’s every gun handler’s job to know.

It seems counter-intuitive, but it’s actually the best way. Most actors know little to nothing about firearms and have to be trained on how to hold them naturally, etc. Armorers are highly trained in all aspects of firearms (not so sure about the armorer in this case), but accidents like this are so rare because of the armorer’s knowledge and professionalism.

Next up will be Baldwin.

This whole case has remarkably evolved through proceedings which explains a lot more detail than I knew immediately

Errors
Ignorance
Negligence

All contributed both from her and Baldwin

Given she was armorer and gave goofball a loaded 1873 colt style revolver she’ll get the time

But Baldwin screwed up but it’s still hard to say

He may have dropped the hammer without pulling trigger?

While obviously pointing it at the lady

It’ll set precedent for sure

I think I heard the Pietta had three hammer positions and any drop from positions can fire the cartridge?

I’ve owned uberti and pietta cap and ball

Decent made guido arms

Pedrrsoli are very nice

Which begs the question:

Why have REAL FIREARMS on set at all?

Hollywood prop makers can duplicate any device from any century.

They should have learned their lesson long ago..........

I understand your point, and it makes sense, given that actors aren’t properly trained. Maybe that’s the area that needs the most attention.
If they’re going to “play” with real guns, the should have real gun training, prior to handling a firearm.
It will be real interesting to see how they try to weasel Baldwin out of any charges.
He’s the big man in charge of the movie set, and ultimately culpable for what happens there.
