'Popcorn lung', cancer: Experts warn of dangers as vaping among youth in Singapore spikes

Doctors treating respiratory issues are not always aware if their patients have been vaping. Therefore, cases are not tracked systematically at hospitals because these patients are not always willing to share their vaping history.

With the clampdown on vaping and the authorities stepping up checks, even in public hot spots such as the Central Business District, parks, malls and bars, patients with breathing issues caused by vaping are aware and are keeping mum.

Dr Sewa Duu Wen, who heads the department of respiratory and critical care medicine at Singapore General Hospital, told The Straits Times about one case of a patient who had been smoking e-cigarettes.

Yes, it would be interesting to see the health risks tracked. The whole vaping industry is disgusting and should be shut down. Use these via prescription to simply help cessation, not become a new alternative to smoking.

Can I at least vape until I’m spitting up blood?

Let’s get rid of free speech, guns, and freedom of religion while we’re at it. Those are abused to. All rights, even the right to use a vape or cigarettes are equal in importance or none of them have any protection.

You have chosen the path of totalitarian despots.

Helped me quit after 30 years. Vape plus patch, then vape, then taper nicotine content in vape from 30mg to 0mg. So thankful for the vape.

originally, I’d heard that like a vitamin e was causing popcorn lung because the kids were loading them up with some illegal thc-based liquid. In other words, kids vaping crap that isn’t meant to vape. Not sure if that still holds true.

Is it buttered popcorn lung or just the boring unbuttered kind?

The name probably comes from when researchers first identified the disease among workers in a microwave popcorn factory. The workers had breathed in diacetyl, a flavoring chemical used to make the popcorn taste buttery.

Crazy people who eat lots of microwave popcorn and like to breathe the air released from the packet when it is first opened have also gotten “popcorn lung”.

Maybe so, but I stand by banning vape. It’s already illegal to use in most public places, health costs are going up. Like cigarettes, let these people sue the manufacturers and sellers to cover their health care costs, not the taxpayer.

I had been vaping for over 10 years with no problem. Mind your own business.

They’re vaping CBD oil. That’s what my daughter uses.

Ditto.
Vaping almost 15 years.
Build my own coils, mix my own fluids.
Still doing great, and halted a 30-year cigarette habit.

SOME people just can’t stand when others find a little tiny bit of joy in their lives, I guess.

I think that the non smoking activists saw smokers switch to vaping, they felt that smokers were “getting over” on them. Hence the bans and constant negative press.

To me, this is less a public health issue and more an “Oh no you don’t!” Issue.

“Let’s let ‘em inject all the heroin they want too”

As long as they are not spending tax funds to do it or recover from it.

If you want to see drug use decline, let the users die.
