Mellencamp was criticized harshly by liberals for criticizing Portland, and by extension New York and LA where the video was shot. He doesn’t care what anyone thinks.

Of course some artists have political songs which can delight—or piss off—their fanbase. Songs, not long winded speeches, and perhaps those will pop up in shows.

They took the Dixie out of their name and may or may not be together, but (I looked it up) after “Traveling Soldier”, the group only had one more top 40 hit—”Not Ready to Make Nice” (hit #4 on charts). A bunch of misses after that.
