Bills advancing in multiple states could see 'thousands' of America's favorite candies, snacks and sodas banned in their current form.
Last October California approved a historic 'Skittles ban' that outlawed four food additives linked to cancer and fertility issues.
Now, New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois have advanced similar measures, targeting a total of 13 additives that are already banned in some European countries over alleged health risks.
New Jersey and Missouri are also considering the bans. If passed, they would force companies to change their recipes or face legal action.
And experts say the moves could change the look, taste and texture of some Americans' favorite food items.
Brian Ronholm, director of food safety at Consumer Reports, a campaign group which has championed the bans, said: 'There is no consumer confusion on this issue — they want these chemicals out of foods.
'But when [consumers] see that the FDA has not been able to keep up with the latest research... they recognize that the states are the only ones trying to protect them from toxic food chemicals right now.'
He warned that thousands of food products including breakfast cereals, sweet treats and beverages could be impacted.

All blue states taking action and none of the snacks are real food anyways.
Carmine is a natural red color used in foods and other products and is made from insect shells. But it doesn’t need to be listed as anything other than *Natural flavors*. Some products hide it like that and others list it as *Carmine*.
My daughter is allergic to it and was breaking out in hives from it. It took us some time to track it down, but we finally tied it to extremely dark chocolate, which uses that to make it so dark.

The FDA’s decisions are always about the dollar, bottom line, and not about safety.
Their history proves that.
The concept for the organization was good, but like everything the government controls.........
I don’t eat this junk. Meat, veggies, &fruit. My only vice s far as nutrition goes is ice cream. I’m helpless in saying no to pistachio with chocolate syrup. Oh, yeah. Dark chocolate is to die for. They better not put any crap in either, or I’m going to grow another head for sure.

Sorry about your daughters allergy, I have allergies myself, not fun… however trying to equate her allergies with passing off petroleum as food is a bit of a stretch, no?
Red #3 is not food by any definition, no living creature, beyond some very specialized microbes are ever found eating petroleum. It is known to contributes to neurological issues and many other things.. it’s not food.
Extracting color from bugs shells may not sound appetizing, but bugs are things that do get and can be eaten. Petroleum is not a food.
Glad I don’t eat any of that crap. But, what will fat ghetto moms using food stamps feed their fat kids? Oh, the humanity.

Make them yourself for about 25 cents vs. $3 at the store for a 8 oz bag.
There is absolutely no reason for all these deadly chemicals. If the products can be made in countries that ban them, then they can be made here without those ingredients.
To be fair, my homemade hardtack can do much the same. It takes breaking it up and putting it in boiling water to make it dissolve. That’s just flour, water and some salt. Of course, hardtack is ALSO flavored like cardboard.
the funny thing is, if you look at EU’s version of the same cereal, the ingredient list is much much shorter. their strict regulation does make the cereal a bit more expensive.

won’t affect me one way or the other: i try to avoid all foods laced with unnecessary synthetic chemicals ...
I saw a similar picture of Coney Island from the 1960s and then present day.
The difference was EVERYONE in the present day picture was FAT.
The other major difference in most pictures today is that at least 1/3 of the people are looking at their smart phone.
Same story at any stop light in any city or suburb in the USA.
Look around you. Many people will be looking at their phones.
Why are they against ingredients that impact human fertility?
What happened to a my body, my choice? Maybe this is the only method of birth control low income folks have access to?
At some point someone will have to do a study to determine if being alive is linked to dying of cancer.
