You didn’t vote for this garbage, but your useful idiot neighbors did, so now you’ve decided to pack up and head to a state with lighter tax burdens (still a burden, but nonetheless more doable), where the government isn’t prioritizing “trans-ing” your child behind your back and threatening to sever the parental relationship if you get in the way; where prosecutors won’t come after you if you’re forced to defend yourself (or others, as in the case of Daniel Penny) against the aggression of a violent criminal; and where illegal invaders aren’t treated like royalty, all on your dime. Ready to pick up and move to another state? Well, you might have to think twice because broke blue states are coming up with a new, creative way to tax you when you cross the border: the EXIT TAX.
This policy is already established in one state—if you guessed California, you’d be correct— but other debt-saddled Democrat states are looking to follow suit. (If you weren’t up to speed, California is facing a historic deficit in the tens of billions.) Now, while the government calls this a “tax” it’s obviously not a tax at all, but a fine, penalizing a producer for rejecting the policies of the progressive Democrat party, the same ones turning everything they touch into a dystopian and apocalyptic landfill.

This is a one-time tax that must be paid by businesses and individuals who relocate outside the state. The tax is based on the value of the business or individual’s assets, including property, stocks and other investments, but not real estate.
Why hasn’t this gone to the Supreme Court?

Sounds rather unconstitutional to me, but...

To get to the Supreme Court the unconstitutional law must be passed.
Then it must be enforced on a real person or entity.
Then they must fight in in court.
Then it needs to work its way through the appeals process if the appeal loses in lower court.
Then the Supreme Court needs to agree to hear the case.
All of this takes a lot of time.
The article said that the tax “follows” for ten years. Does that mean that it is paid annually for ten years?
This was easy to predict.
I’ve said many times, marxism cannot exist in a vacuum. Despite how marxists feel about it, it is intrinsically oppressive. It cannot continue in competition with non-marxist CHOICES. All of the leaches and deadbeats will get left behind with no one to leach on. Therefor, it is essential to globalize marxism.
Since California cannot globalize marxism and eliminate alternatives (yet), they are forced to punish those who leave.
Somewhere I read that the California assault weapons ban follows California residents around. In other words they can’t buy a 30 round magazine in Nevada and keep it in Nevada.
This is a similar situation. Is this correct?
I don’t know the answer to your question. Since there is no background check or registration of a magazine, I don’t see how California would know what happened in Nevada. I don’t see how California would have jurisdiction, but California is crazy so I don’t know what they might try.
As cgbg noted in post #8, it takes a long time for a problem to wind its way to the US Supreme Court. But maybe a district federal judge could quickly strike down this (proposed) California law.

This is clearly taxation without representation.

Stories a few years ago during one of Calif repressions of agents staking out Nevada gun shops and then stopping Calif residents returning if seen buying something like magazines.
Having spies to watch for residents taking advantage of a free state for later prosecution is not surprising.
Good luck collecting that. California tried this before. Nevada’s AG told them to pound sand.
Which is why people continue to buy gold and Bitcoin.
