An older friend of mine inherited a house with a large flower garden in the back. The flower garden is maybe 10 feet by 30 feet.
Between the flowers and the shrubbery there are many weeds (no surprise there). A landscaper she talked to will clear the area of weeds, and has given her some options to control future weed growth.
does weed fabric block gophers? if not, what if anything blocks gophers?
I have 54 5-gallon buckets with holes in the bottom filled with good soil in our vegetable garden.
I only water the buckets, so I am not watering weeds.
Anything not in a bucket is weed-wacked.
For our flower garden I use sections of PVC pipe around the plants instead of buckets and weed-wack anything not surrounded by PVC pipe.
What is the question?
All of these are viable choices, so what do you want? if it's low maintenance you're after don't rule out a hardscape with various size stones and stuff composed for an aesthetic presentation instead of just... rocks... :) Keep the leaves and debris cleaned out of it and voila! Nice, low-maintenance landscape. Maybe stick in a couple of evergreens and a specimen plant in a pot for the growing season. Costs a bit at first but buy once, cry once.

Thanks for posting. I am dealing with a similar problem. Just ordered pea gravel today to cover the weedy area out back. The people who moved in next door will not deal with their weeds, so now the nice, easy to remove sticky tall thistle weeds are replaced by annoying prairie grass weeds and dandelions.
I am going to use fabric. Maybe two layers. And then spray like hell. I’ll probably put down a lot of Preen down on the fabric before putting on the pea gravel.

Yep. Through their 24 years at their home, our nearest neighbors here in the woods have made several flower beds in their 2 acres. They adjoin the edge of the house or are out in the yard. They have also created 2 foot mulched areas around about a dozen trees. Every one of these areas have been given rock borders, with the rocks being about fist to football size.
He is 91, and she is 85. Both still have decent health, but have been paying me to come over to string trim more and more. The use a Dawn soap-epsom salts-vinager weed burnback spray mix.
They could cut back on a LOT of spraying and weed eating if they got rid of the rock borders,... at least around the trees.
Clear the weeds however you wish. Level the ground. Install 13-inch concrete pavers edge to edge no cement or adhesive needed. 10x30 is not a large area. Works out to 250 pavers. You can buy them a little at a time over several weeks carted home in your own vehicle and lay them at your leisure, or have the store drop ship the entire load on your driveway. Get a propane torch weed burner online from Coleman, around 35 bucks. The wand is about three feet long it won’t burn you it is simple to use just use common sense. It takes small propane camper style refills 2 for 9 bucks at WalMart and they last a long time. When the weeds show up between the pavers it’s a couple of minutes’ work to burn them out completely once every few weeks. No pulling or sweeping needed. The pavers will not show any discoloration afterward. Any other way you will be messing with tons of weeds forever.

My veggies do well by benign neglect.
Have not had to plant any tomatoes, peppers and a few herbs in the 5 years here. They are ‘wild’ out of the compost pile.

We have a lot of space and are getting older. We like landscape cloth and lava rock as it’s easier to haul around.
But some areas, we just plant ground covers like periwinkle, thyme, or violets. As long as they don’t grow bigger than a foot, it fills in an area nicely
As #1, but put down weed fabric first.
Mowing is the easiest and fastest solution and maintenance.
