National pickle shortage tied to extreme weather in Mexico
Fox Weather ^ | 05/03/2024 | Andrew Wulfeck

Are you a pickle connoisseur? If so, extreme weather in Mexico may be impacting the availability of the snack in the U.S.

Every year, Americans consume more than 20 billion pickles, but recently, consumers have noticed some restaurants warning of a "national pickle shortage."

The warnings from restaurants such as Firehouse Subs, local delis and others are generally bona fide, as both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and experts from North Carolina State University say that the combination of reliance on imports and extreme weather could impact supplies.

Pickles go on burgers. War against beef.

I’m about to start growing cucumbers and dill here in Michigan. Last year I had a lousy cucumber crop but still managed to get over 50 quarts. Had a stellar year in 2022 and canned over 100 quarts of pickles. Far as I’m concerned my dill pickles are way better than any store bought.

Sounds like her Rottonness's fault, doesn't want another tough TV stint. No pickles, no jars.

My garden is green and full this year thanks to the excellent weather. No shortage here.

"Last year I had a lousy cucumber crop but still managed to get over 50 quarts."

Yikes! We get maybe three dozen pints a year, and think we're doing good.

God bless you - 50 quarts!

What fresh hell is this?

This crop report is just filled with good news!

"National pickle shortage" proclaims that America is no longer in a pickle.

The lack of pickles is being attributed to El Niño, aka the Christ child.

"In certain growing regions, it has been too hot (100 °F), which reduces yields. In other key production regions in Mexico, it has been too cold. The crop has not suffered from freezes but temperatures that do not promote pickling cucumber growth."

And would you just look at the "pickle" map!? There's being in a pickle just on the face of it, like being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

How to get out of a situation like that? El Niño simply removes the pickles from across the Fruited Plain.

It's crunch time!

Pickles go on burgers.

Some pickles do. Pickle slices do. Those places that bring out a burger with no pickles ON it, but rather a pickle spear on the side should be shut down under rules of the Geneva Convention.

I have a nice cucumber growing area, about 20’ x 4’ X 8’. Plus I put string for the vines to continue growing overhead.

Is it El Niño or Climate Change?
If they can't blame Climate Change, then nobody cares.
Pickles is a foodstuff I like, but can live perfectly well without.

Did Biden also sell off the Strategic Pickle Reserve to try to hide inflation?

How else to charge the ridiculous prices they will soon be.

(Think coffee, sugar, eggs, chicken...)

Sounds like they are in a pickle.
Yes, I read all the comments just to make sure nobody else said it.

Are you selling a portion of your pickle harvest, or perhaps including a pickle in every meal? I hear they, like other fermented foods, are good for essential gut bacteria.

My favorite food is a cheeseburger, and it requires dill pickles. So I go through about a quart a month.

No I don’t sell, but I readily share. As I make the next batch of pickles I give away the last years, which are well “pickled” by now.

Why does so much of our produce come from Mexico? In Southern California, all Roma tomatoes come from Mexico, as do most other varieties. Yet California has an excellent climate for growing tomatoes.

I love my good health, so I try to avoid buying produce from Mexico and try to get my tomatoes at farmers’ markets.
