True. Some of it no doubt at all was antisemitism. Remember the time though. The Soviets had annexed the Baltic Countries a year or so earlier and Stalin murdered and deported a bunch of people from all 3. Since so many prominent Commies were Jews, many associated the Jews with the Commies. Therefore when the Nazis rolled into the Baltic Countries, many of the locals were absolutely furious with the Commies and took out their anger on anybody they thought was sympathetic to the Commies. One slaughter brought about a counter slaughter. The same thing happened in Ukraine.
And the Nazis were more than happy to encourage it.
Which in addition to being a terrible human tragedy/crime, also would have been a horrible waste. When I first went to Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, I had always had this image of Polish chicks as heavy set farm girls wearing burlap.
BOY was I wrong! Poland has some real hotties!....and let's just say they seem to like their dairy products in that country. Damn.
It’s why I love visiting Warsaw and seeing how vibrant it is, after what they did to the city during WWII. It’s the biggest “middle finger” to Hitler I can think of.
I bet the creator was including the Italo-Ethiopian 2nd war which I think had close to 1/4 million deaths (civ and military). It ended in ‘37 which is when many think the war actually began (China).
