A Modest Proposal A Solution For The Eradication of Terrorism and the Impending War

Alicia Lambert English 1A Modest Proposal

The dedicated round-the-clock efforts of Saddam Hussein to relinquish and deliver Iraq's weapons of mass destruction to the United Nations and their inspectors has made many Americans ponder if they are seeing a new side to this ruthless dictator. By giving up Iraq’s short range missiles, granting interviews to the American Press, and promising to finally cooperate with the United Nations, Saddam has successfully shown France, Russia and even some Americans that he is not an evil madman after all. Some believe that if America strikes Iraq, we will be irrationally defending against terrorism or spilling blood for oil. America has become a nation divided, with its own people questioning if Bush has become a modern day Hitler and has America become, as Noam Chomsky avowed in A Modest Proposal "a menace to itself and to mankind." United Nations inspections in 1999 revealed that Iraq has biological weapons in the amount of twenty-five thousand liters of anthrax, enough doses to kill several million people and thirty-eight liters of botulinum toxin, enough to subject millions of people to death by respiratory failure (Secretary of State Colin Powell, Address to the Nation). Considering that Saddam has made such a laudable attempt at cooperation, we can rightly assume that Saddam would only keep these chemical weapons, so that our evil President, George W. Bush, does not acquire such dangerous materials. U.S. intelligence reveals that Saddam Hussein has enough materials to produce five hundred tons of sarin, mustard, and VX nerve agents, the same chemicals used on forty Kurdish villages in northern Iraq who apposed Saddam Hussein (Bureau of Public Affairs “Saddam’s Chemical Weapon Campaign”). Perhaps since Iraq is in a desert, Saddam was simply of need of lab rats to test chemicals on. How distasteful of President Bush to not have made available to Saddam some of our lab rats which could have in turn prevented this horrible tragedy. Iraq has upwards of thirty thousand munitions capable of delivering chemical agents. UN inspectors recently found sixteen of them, leaving the rest of the twenty-nine thousand nine hundred and eighty four of these prohibited munitions unaccounted for (Office of the Historian, Bureau of Public Affairs, “The United States and the Global Coalition Against Terrorism). The United Nations and the United States claim that Saddam has not accounted for any of these dangerous materials and has not provided evidence that anything has been destroyed (Secretary of State Colin Powell, Address to the Nation). If inspectors were given more time for investigations, they would undoubtedly uncover the truth; that Saddam has lost all twenty-nine thousand, nine hundred and eighty four chemical munitions. We could hardly assume otherwise considering what a small number that is. As history shows, Republicans are to blame for every problem in the Country. Economist Paul Krugman reported “literally before the dust had settled over the World Trade Center ruins, influential Republicans signaled that they were determined to use terrorism as an excuse to pursue a radical right-wing agenda.” Truly, right after September 11, President Bush realized what he could gain from oil in Iraq. The only thing that is puzzling in regards to President Bush wanting to bomb Saddam for oil is that President Clinton chose to do the same thing in December 1998. After speaking with a highly esteemed colleague who has inside information on what took place during the Clinton Administration, I was told a shocking secret. Monica Lewinsky was really a spy from the George Bush I administration, and blackmailed President Clinton into bombing Iraq in 1998. This further proves that the Republican Party is a corrupt and merciless government division and responsible for the attack on Iraq in 1998. Never mind the fact that Saddam Hussein has been found guilty of material breach of contract for 16 resolutions in the past 12 years (Secretary of State Colin Powell, Address to the Nation); or the fact that Saddam has used his chemical weapons during Desert Storm when he invaded Kuwait, pillaging the Country and slaughtering thousands of people. We should ignore these facts because the United States and our President receive worse press than Saddam Hussein and Iraq. U.S. Intelligence agencies are providing false information so that our President can become even wealthier because of all of the oil he will be gaining. If we take military action we will be risking the lives of innocent Iraqi people, regardless of the reality that Saddam Hussein tests chemical weapons on his own people every week, leaving thousands dead, blind and disfigured (Secretary of State Colin Powell, Address to the Nation). Saddam can hardly be considered as dangerous as our Hitler-like American President, who as of yet hasn’t harmed anyone. One can never be sure what a second term would hold. On December 22, 2002 UN inspectors arrived at an empty inspection site. Earlier that week at the same inspection site, our government acquired pictures of fifteen munitions bunkers of which four were active chemical bunkers. Shockingly, everything was vacant upon the UN officials’ arrival. Many Anti-war protestors considered this a coincidence. What a huge series of coincidences when the fact remains that vehicles, equipment and entire camps have completely disappeared at thirty additional inspection sites (Secretary of State Colin Powell, Address to the Nation). In America’s harshness, we were blinded to the idea that just because Saddam has prohibited U-2 reconnaissance flights, and just because he has been caught red handed with enough weapons to kill a small Country, that he probably never intended on harming or upsetting anyone. Perhaps he hasn’t recognized the difference between lab-rats and his own people when using chemical weapons. Americans need to be more understanding and try a different approach other than war to solve this horrific problem. Certainly, it is a noble cause for those oppressed Americans to try and tear down the Bush administration and the evil dictatorship it stands for due to their aggression towards a peace loving country such as Iraq. I have earnestly considered how to alleviate the fears of those who want peace at all costs and who believe that Bush is a greater threat than Saddam. Reflecting upon all these matters, I believe that the solution starts with Saddam. What are the alternatives to bombing Iraq? What would ensure that Saddam would not use his weapons of mass destruction on us without us using military force on him? I humbly propose that Americans and all other nations consider giving Saddam the world. We can make him ruler of every nation and in turn he will have to attend therapy classes. This will ensure that he stays in touch with his kind-hearted inner-self and he will stop making weapons of mass destruction because he will not have any use for them. I have thought about the fact that we would probably lose some of the freedoms that we as a Country value, but that can hardly be considered. After all, if we do not use force with Iraq to take away its weapons now, America and many other Countries will have to answer for it later with our lives and freedoms. By acting now we can give up a few freedoms, and save Iraqi lives. Patrick Henry once said, “Give me liberty or give me death!” I say, better be alive and oppressed under a cruel dictator, than lose a visionary like Saddam! All that truly matters is sparing innocent lives, so giving up a few freedoms will be a small price in comparison. Some believe that Saddam just likes to torture and kill people for the fun of it. By demanding that he attend therapy classes every week, we can be sure that he stays in touch with his sympathetic qualities and he can discover why he feels the need to lash out on humanity. After all, as Jacotte Chollet, author of Harmonic Resonance Healing once said, “Inner contact is the key to healing.” Some of the best renowned Psychiatrists believe that listening to multidimensional music can bring on incredible healing and peace. The United Nations could now be in charge of making sure that Saddam is given these tapes. The UN can then concentrate their combined efforts on finding out the deeper meaning for what has made Saddam so miserable all of these years. Manuel Schoch accurately states that “aggression is a symptom of fear and of fear being a symptom of sadness.” Therefore, if we can truly assess what is hurting Saddam, we can find the key to his inner-beauty and self, making him a president worthy of any nation and unlocking the key to why this man has been so misunderstood. My humble proposal will also solve liberal America’s extreme hate and discontentment with President Bush. Since President Bush is the evil dictator and murderer of this generation, Saddam will look like an angel in comparison. A.N.S.W.E.R. claims, “Far from being a threat to the United States, or any other people, Iraq has been the victim of U.S. aggression for 12 years.” This being the case, our government and the Kuwaiti people must have conspired and lied about Iraq’s savage invasion of Kuwait in which Kuwait’s people were killed, raped, maimed, and tortured. The Bush Administration should be punished severely for this terrible lie because if George W. Bush didn’t lie, at the very least he should be punished for his father’s lies. My proposal is beneficial to all the people of the world. All the Countries opposing war would finally have a ruler who is gifted in causing the entire world to rally around him, who is not afraid to take actions necessary to squelch adversity, someone who really knows how to have command of an assembly and get them to do anything he wants, and someone with a backbone. By impeaching President Bush and nominating Saddam as supreme dictator, we can unite the nations and bring peace to the world. If terrorists ran the entire country, they would have nothing to terrorize. This would also lower the suicide and murder rate, as terrorists would no longer have a reason to kill themselves and others for their faith. It is a distressing subject to consider for sure, but after speaking with many renowned acquaintances on this matter, everyone thought that giving Saddam the world would be the most rational solution to such a pressing and difficult problem. No one I spoke with is anxious to go to war because killing people no matter what the reason is a difficult decision. I am open to other proposals, but thus far, nothing has come into action that would benefit all parties involved. It would definitely not be an option to come together as a country as we did after September 11, 2001. We couldn’t begin to read the facts and information given to us by top Security intelligence sources or trust reports from previous United Nations inspections. We cannot trust American Intelligence sources, which possess the top technology and equipment in the world. Collin Powell, the Secretary of State is surely an uneducated, ignorant person whose lies are only intended to advance President Bush’s oil venture. Instead of having rallies that support our men and women overseas who are risking their lives for our freedoms and way of life, we shall continue to have rallies opposing our President and his decisions so the world will see and understand that we are free to do such things. We can use the Vietnam protestors as an example on how to treat those selfish men and women who are risking their lives to protect our lives by calling them baby-killers, spitting on them, and hurling flying objects at them. That was a heart-warming time in history. America was founded on the idea of individual freedom, and heroic men and women fought for those freedoms. We were once a nation determined to protect those freedoms, but we have evolved as a people. Now we see the quality of “turning the other cheek” and “killing with kindness.” Holding up a two fingered peace sign as apposed to claiming our sovereign right to protect ourselves will show our growth. This modest proposal will show the American peoples’ compassion, diplomacy, and tolerance.

Oh my, yet another proposal that displays a shocking amount of naivety and lack of common sense.

In the land of fuzzy bunnies and lollipops, such a proposal makes sense.
