SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - An organizer of a planned memorial to honor Confederate soldiers who died at an Illinois prison camp says the rebel flag will be displayed at the memorial's dedication, despite opposition.
"We consider this an honorable flag. This is a soldier's flag," said Ron Casteel, national chief of staff for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, one of the memorial's planners. "There will be no substitute."
Camp Butler, just east of Springfield, was a training facility for Union troops during the Civil War and a prison camp for more than 3,500 captured Confederates. More than 800 of the prisoners died and were buried there, and the site is now a national cemetery.

The Confederacy committed suicide? I think history proves that it was attacked and defeated by the tyrant in question.
Get on our knees to worship a madman that instigated a war of subjugation, a war that lead to the deaths of 623,000 men, and untold innocent Southern women and children deprived of the husband or father, because some 1861 version of Sadaam would rather kill his own people rather than acknowledge their right to self government?
Pray for a lunatic that assumed the roles of Congress and the judiciary - by definition a tyrant - who had the insane idea that waging war on his fellow man to prevent their independence was a just cause? Do you also worship American Tories, and wish that they had been successful in preventing American independence?
Before our independence from Britain, a young Christian lawyer rode into Culpepper VA, only to witness the "scourging" of a Baptist preacher, simply because the preacher refused to purchase a license from the Crown to preach. Scourging laid open the man's back, down to the very bone. Three days later the preacher still refused to purchase a license, and was scourged again.
He died that same day. That preacher was one of twelve who stood up to a tyrannical government. The young lawyer, after witnessing the incident, went on exhort his fellow countrymen to declare their independence, indeed it was his vivid portrayal of that scene that many claim was the turning point which cemented our determination to secede from Britain. In that historic speech, he dramatically and passionately poured his very emotion into words,
'What is it that Gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know no what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!'Of course, we know that young lawyer as Patrick Henry. Another famous American, Samuel Adams, perfectly expressed his sentiments for cowards, Tories and statists (aka Lincolites),
'If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.'You have the unmitigated gall to insinuate that myself and others, who ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, whose ancestors - simple farmers - picked up their guns and rushed to defend their home from invasion, leaving their wife and family to do so, should bow down and thank God for the death of their loved ones?

The Yellow Rose, among some of the TRUE stories told about her exploits for TEXAS FREEDOM,was asked to "entertain" the dictator, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, on the night prior to San Jacinto & to try to find out his plans.
She was SO ENTERTAINING that he never left his tent during the BATTLE!
otoh, i have NOT been able to document from the records that she also "stuck a dagger in the throats of two Mexican Lancer Colonels after Goliad", though i've asked a BUNCH of more knowledgeable people than i if they knew of documentation of that particular exploit.
i DO know that at least FOUR men in Grayson County got themselves KILLED by other suitors for her favors. TWO other men committed SUICIDE, because she rejected their proposals of marriage in the 1840s.
The Yellow Rose must have been SPECTACULARLY beautiful! (the ONLY painting of her that is known to exist was painted MORE than 40 YEARS after her death, based on the memory of one of her many admirers, who was then "old & infirm".)
