Three years ago, I made a commitment to watch only television shows that featured Black actors, writers, and directors.
More on that, but first you need to know my backstory.
Saved by the Bell was my favorite television show as a teenager, and Pretty in Pink one of my favorite movies. Although, it was probably Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Darks If You Leave on the films soundtrack that made me like it more than I might have otherwise. Saved by the Bells Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) was definitely my teenage heartthrob. The favorite part of my after-school routine was watching Zack, while doing homework. In my minds eye, I too attended the very nice and very colorblind Bayside High.
But Zack wasnt the first. There was Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox), the fanatically conservative son in Family Ties, and Kirk Camerons portrayal of slacker/girl chaser Mike Seaver in Growing Pains, and Silver Spoons Ricky Stratton (Rick Schroder), the blonde rich kid with a winning smile.
I often pictured myself outside of my mostly Black life as a love interest for all of these stars. Never mind that not one of the shows ever gave me reason to think that I actually could be....

Some of these older shows had hilarious music references, too. One of my favorites - George and Weezie were going to a costume party, Weezie was dressed as Cleopatra. Florence kept asking her who she was going as, and Weezie kept trying to get her to guess - “Anthony and...” Florence jumpepd up and yelled “The Imperials” and started singing Tears On My Pillow.
“Coming to America” with Eddie Murphy was pretty funny, too. The over-the-top portrayal of an African King and his palace was hilarious.

I always felt bad for the little ghetto kids. Still innocent and could be raised right but unfortunately they were destined to turn out like their parents. Where are the "black leaders" on this???? Worried about white folks I guess.
Car Wash
Funny...I don’t have the opportunity to watch all white shows. That would be considered racist!!!!
Family Feud with Steve Harvey? It’s pretty much guaranteed to have at least one black family. Like Harvey a lot.
The Color Purple.
Cotton.
I noticed.
Hardly ever see Latino or Asian families................
I to watch shows with all normal people, shows that extol American greatness. That’s why I’ve been watching more and more movies from the 30s to the 60s.
Amen. The tv is off a lot these days. We do enjoy "Young Sheldon" but definitely not "Modern Family". To think at one time you could watch HGTV (which I call HomoGayTV) and the Foodnetwork without constantly being assaulted with loud and proud LGBTs.
So, by your own admission, fictional characters are more important to you than the actual human beings in your life...
You got much bigger problems to deal with, that you don’t even realize.
Another adult ruined by critical theory and not taught how to critically think...
A shame.
Don’t cha know, Meghan is considered white whereas Obama, who has about the same percent of blackness is considered black. Crazy.
Yeah, they were great.(/s) Of course every white adult male on either show was portrayed as either a heavy, a bigot or a fool.
Mr. McDowell (played by John Amos) was a latter-day George Jefferson.
Elizabeth, this is the big one. I’m comin’ to join you.
