The alternative for many of these young ladies was actually working as a prostitute/drug addict on the streets of NYC. IF you were in their position, what would you do?

Psychological manipulaton, drugs, blackmail, personal and family circumstances, fear, debt, sense of hopelessness and giving up, self esteem, threats to self, family, and children, shame. Probly some more I can't think of off-hand.
Ask yourself how eastern European, Chinese, or Latin American women sold into slavery and sex work in the United States don't bolt at the first opportunity. You can find them at your local strip clubs.
