Question for my Fellow Freepers...
March 23, 2005 | Hildy

Posted on 03/23/2005 5:09:24 PM PST by Hildy

You are in your 20's, and you're visiting somebody in the hospital. You pass by a room where somebody is all contorted up, in a vegitative state. Would you say to your husband:

a)Honey, Don't ever let me live in that condition.

b )Honey, If I ever get like that, please make sure you do everything in your power, whatever the cost to you and our family, financially and emotionally, to keep me in that vegitative state no matter how long it takes. I want you to come and sit by my side every day and go home alone every night. I want to have strangers tend to my most personal needs. If I don't respond in four or five years, make sure I'm kept alive by a feeding tube in my stomach. And, most importantly, if you're not sure if I know what's going on around me, please err on the side of caution and keep me in that bed, indefinitely.

Remember, you're 24 years old. Which one would you pick?

I would say, honey, lets get living wills drawn up so we NEVER go through that.

I stand by my first answer.

-By the way, Terrri's parents offered to take on all her costs.

You don't have to worry....probably no one would care enough to save you since you've said you've wanted to Starve to Death.

If that's an honest answer, then I thank you. And I intend to stand by my statement. You will never see me on a Terri thread again.

"Honey, I sure chose well years ago when I asked you to dance instead of your friend Hildy.
I know that if an illness or handicap befalls me my life won't suddenly become expendable"

Since the day Terri was admitted into the hospital, she could not swallow. They did yearly or more often swallow tests for 3 years. She never passed.

And as far as I've read, no one after 3 months PVS have ever come out of it so after the 3rd or 4th years, the therapy stopped.

If you want links to court documents, I'll be happy to send them. Going off line soon for a while.

If she was in a state to die, she could have initiated a living will to not necessitate.

If she had no way to communicate, you have no idea if she wanted to die then.
If she could communicate, the living will should have been made at any point.

What I posted there is what I would say. "Do what's right, not what you think will make me more comfortable." Those are precisely the words I would say.

Because otherwise I would be asking someone to potentially harm themselves for my benefit, and I wouldn't want to do that.

You are now 50 years old, you have lived your life with your loved one for 30 years, now what do you say, "Honey, I have always loved you, do what you think is best" Compared to someone married less than 5 years contemplating divorce on the eve of this disaster.

I'd walk by and say hello to her family that is visiting her and keeping her company.
I don't worry about such things - the Lord knows the hour, the minute, and the second when I will be Home, and I won't feed the egos of the courts, the attorneys, or the doctors by giving them a false sense of power over life and death.

But that's just me.

Strawman arguement. I answer my way.

C:

Give me due process.
Don't walk out and bang someone else while still staying married(if she couldn't handle it, she should transfer guardianship to my parents). I wouldn't do that if I was in Michael Shivaro's position as I'm not a backstabbing adulterer.
Give me any chance to rehabilitate.
No Dr Jack, and no starving me to death.
If I am conscience and have a chance to recover with a strong therapy program, keep me on life support.
Don't ever move me to Pinellas County.

Please read up on this case. Everyone testified, INCLUDING her parents that she is in a PVS.

We have thousands of Americans who are doing no better than Terri. How come their guardians aren't pulling the plug on them or pulling the feeding tube so they starve to death

Michael Schiavo has been killing Terri for years. Trying to kill her for years. In the beginning he was good and helpful, but once the insurance settlements came in he denied all rehabilitative care to Terri

Michael has been there, even more than her parents.

I have asked my wife to attempt to rehabilitate me first, something that is critically lacking in the Terri case

That is exactly right. Terri was never given a chance at rehabilitation. Her "husband" is not acting lovingly toward her at all.

That's not true. Do you homework and then get back to me.

Suppose if you found yourself in that situation and weren't quite ready to die?

Suppose you were made to realize that it would break your parents' hearts if you were killed while they still held hope?

Suppose there was a chance for improvement but "bioethicists" whose function is to clear hospice beds when funding ended discounted it?

That's not the question. All I'm asking is what do you think a 24 year old woman's wishes would be. What is so hard to understand?

BTW Chrissy Matthews said tonight that this case is going to be forgotten within 6 months.

I think this debate is not even at its pinnacle yet.
