Today's Chicago Tribune story on a group protesting Republican Congressional efforts to curb social spending identifies Rev. Jim Wallis as a "Christian activist." The article reports he is a leader of "a Christian social justice group" and speaks of "Wallis and other progressive religious leaders."
It would be more accurate to describe Wallis as an activist liberal Democrat. He's long been a force within the Democratic party and, as noted in the Weekly Standard, has a " 35-year history of effectively pacifist, anti-capitalist, pro-socialist positions. With the exception of abortion and family values, the political issues that animate him today are the direct descendants of those that launched him into a career of activism back in his student days, when he and his friends were being tear-gassed protesting U.S. involvement in Vietnam, in the heyday of the New Left."
Yet the Chicago Tribune article doesn't even include the word "liberal." The opposite of conservative no longer is liberal, apparently. It's "progressive."
TOPICS: Government; Politics; Society
KEYWORDS: calltorenewal; evangelicalcovenant; marxist; marxists; socialist; socialists; sojourners; wallis
And yet some still describe the Chicago Tribune as an extremely conservative newspaper.

Democrat. Progressive. Socialist. Leninist. Marxist.
A piece of sh** by any other name still stinks as bad.

Wouldn't one have to be in favor of progress to be a progressive? There is no progress to be found in the few plans the defeatocrats propose.

Perfectly stated, no need to add to that.

Progressive is fine with me. The word progressive is seen more in communist and socialist organizations and in their propaganda than the word liberal. Just google "progressive = communist" and you'll see what I mean.

Wouldn't one have to be in favor of progress to be a progressive? The left does this all the time.
There's a segment of society which has higher than average rates of Depression, substance abuse, unusual diseases, physical abuse of the people they love and, not surprisingly, very high suicide rates. We call these people "gay" but they are not happy.
And Progressives are the ones who think economic, social, and political ideas from the 1930's are still cutting edge.
Orwell had this pegged 60 years ago. War is Peace.

Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet):
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet."
Conversely, "That which we call a liberal skunk by any other word would smell as foul."

They try to mainstream the guy by using his religious affiliations. They add progressive to religion and all the sudden many readers don't hear socialist.

And yet some still describe the Chicago Tribune as an extremely conservative newspaper. Compared to the NY Times and friends they are very conservative. Compared to the average American they are slightly to the left. It's all relative.
To: Always Right
Compared to the NY Times and friends they are very conservative. The Tribune routinely - at least four times in the past two days - carries material provided by the New York Times News Service.

Whenever I hear the words "social justice," I have a pretty good idea that socialist "justice" is what's intended.

"Progressive" is the term the Communists decided to use (people not liking "communist") after they gave up calling each other "fellow travelers".
I find it amusing that modern liberalism has jumped back on the bandwagon of coveting the "progressive" trademark. Given its communist roots, I frankly can't think of anything more appropriate.

My guess is the guy hated Nixon because RMN wouldn't provide universal dental care.
