Again, the Progressives are shown to be the Marx loving statists they've always been.

Without the UAW, GM certainly wouldn't be swirling around the bowl...

Uh, not to draw straws, but the GM management AGREED to every damned one of these payouts and arrangements that he claims is killing GM.... While I am no fan of Unions, piss poor management let the unions run roughshod over the company.
Unions are part of the world, but not every company that has had to deal with Unions finds itself in the boat the Airlines and Auto and Steel manufacturers are... Weyerhauser has had to deal with Unions, but instead of just capitulating to them during negotiations held the line, and DEMANDED something from the Union in exchange for better pay or benefits...and never agreed to pay or benefits beyond reasonably sound financial sense.
Weyerhauser of course is not alone in this... GM and the rest of em, just made expedited decisions as management and refused to do what was right, but not easy, when it needed to be done... now it all comes home to roost.

Where Would General Motors Be Without the United Automobile Workers Union? Without a convenient excuse for its failure, that's where.

Let's see...
They'd make better cars. Cheaper cars. More competitive cars. And they'd have better employees that made very good livings but without the exorbitant payroll expenses the Yoon-Yuns have given them.

I don't think GM can be fixed at this point because of the UAW contracts. Their number one priority needs to be cutting back to two brands of cars: a Cadillac luxury division and a General Motors division for everything else - no more Chevrolet, no more Saturn, no more Pontiac. Then they need to drastically cut down the number of models they produce, automate and modernize the assembly lines, steal Japanese plant management techniques, and deliver quality cars for about five years before the public starts to trust their product again. The UAW stands squarely in the way of all of this.
Their only solution is bankruptcy and restarting with all-new union-free plants in a place like Texas.

Actually, I was just thinking about this exact topic the other day. What I would like to see is a balance sheet that documents:
*Compensation costs today with a union.
*Compensation costs without a union, direct to worker, that allows workers to keep, net after taxes, more than what they currently make today net after taxes AND after union dues deductions
There must be a win-win there for workers and business. If there is, and I believe there is, we then need to take this case to the American people so unions get placed on the ash-heap of history, where they belong.

I'm no fan of the Unions .. mainly because they drive companies out of business .. or to other countries because they can't afford to stay in America
But to label the workers as drunks isn't fair
