What I like about Thompson is that he is strong on illegal immigration (supporting enforcement first, against granting benefits to illegals) but not crazy restrictive on legal immigration by trying to force dramatic cuts in legal immigration. To me the problem is the undocumented illegal aliens and the economic and security concerns that follow.

Indeed, he's one of the few people who seems to understand (though I haven't heard him say this explicitly) that for the rule of law to survive, those who try to obey the law must be treated better than those who flout it.

Whether or not we should have things like the visa lottery, at least the people who 'win' there have demonstrated some desire to follow the law. That's a lot more than can be said for the illegals that Rudy was sheltering.
