(Washington, DC 5/14/09) Reflecting upon the latest increase in tobacco taxes, it has been determined by the current administration that the huge bump in these taxes has in fact hurt the very people the SCHIP law was intended to benefit. They promise a fix is coming that will rectify this situation.
"We understand now, fully, the impact this tax is having on the poor. E-mail after e-mail is received by the White House complaining that the choice is now food or cigarettes. As the President is a smoker, we understand people shouldn't have to make such a stark choice."
"A new program will be implemented that will ensure every American over the age of 18 will be required to purchase a carton of cigarettes whether or not they smoke for donation to the local shelter or food bank of their choice for free distribution to the poor. We are considering a $100 tax credit if the taxpayer can conclusively prove they've purchased a minimum of 52 cartons during the course of the year and donated these cigarettes. It will only cost each taxpayer $2,500 per year. If you're working, you can afford it."
"In this way we ensure we will have far and beyond the 22 million new smokers required to fund this program after 10 years. It will be a boon to the tobacco industry creating new jobs, it will benefit the poor who no longer have to purchase their smokes, and it provides a tax benefit to the people buying them. Everybody wins."
Developing..
. . . hey . . . it might even save Social Security!
Has to be sarcasm.
I was actually reaching for some bullets when I finally came across it.
“E-mail after e-mail is received by the White House complaining that the choice is now food or cigarettes.”
Replace “cigarettes” with “health care” and the story changes from sick humor to fact.
Wouldn’t put it past 0 to do something like that.
Everyday I think, “it can’t get any crazier”, but it does.
