As the Tea Party Express rolled into Searchlight on Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wasn’t home. Instead, he spent his morning at the grand opening of the Clark County Shooting Park, firing a shotgun at one of the facility’s new ranges.

“Everyone has said this is the greatest park in the United States of America, but I say it’s the greatest gun park in the world,” Reid said.

Reid helped to secure land and $61 million for the 2,900-acre facility under the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. He was joined at the ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday by National Rifle Association of America Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, Rep. Shelley Berkley, Rep. Dina Titus, state Sen. John Jay Lee and Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins.

Reid practiced shooting at one of the ranges, firing six rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun and hitting two clay birds. Each clay bird busted into pieces and the crowd cheered as Reid reloaded the gun. Collins also fired several rounds.

Shooting at the park, on the northern edge of the valley, costs $7 per day for rifles, pistols and archery and $6 per 25-bird round for shotguns.

It has an archery range and building with a 30-seat classroom, a rifle and pistol range, and a shotgun center and 80 spaces for recreational vehicles.

LaPierre said the park is expected to be a tourist attraction with 35,000 to 40,000 people expected to participate in shooting activities each year.

“I know how you worked,” LaPierre said to Reid before turning back to the audience. “(This) would not have opened without the work of Sen. Reid.”

Since the park first opened on weekends in January, Lee said more than 4,000 shooters have participated – which he called a significant amount considering the range hasn’t been advertising.

The park will also be used for educational purposes, Collins said. Many youth groups have visited the park to learn about shooting sports and gun safety, he said.

Michael Reese, 15, said he has been shooting for seven years and visits the park every other weekend with his father. It’s become a tradition for the two of them, he said.

“It’s a very nice facility,” Reese said.

I was just about to send in my payment to renew and upgrade my membership in the NRA. I am tearing up the check and joining GOA.

Wayne, what a disappointment!

I don't get the NRA. The biggest threat to the 2nd amendment isn't anti-gun pols, it's the SCOTUS. I don't care if Dingy supports legalizing machine guns, it doesn't matter as long as he supports the left wing radicals BHO nominates to the federal courts.

Keep up the fight.

I used to be a yearly membership guy but then I started to receive telephone solicitations from the NRA, you know, vote for this—or-that, need money, that sort of stuff.

Thing is, they were calling me on my cell phone. I told them to stop calling me on my cell, I called the HQ as well, nothing worked. Finally, I had enough after receiving in one week two calls on my cell, waking me up while I was in London!! When I got back and called the NRA HQ, they couldn’t seem to care, they blamed the company they contract to do the calls, making excuses that it takes time to remove someone from their call list. . . .what, like 6-months wasn’t enough time?

I quit and their membership solicitation/renewal forms get send back in the (empty) pre-paid envelope.

Reid is engaging in political gimmickry. He’s not a friend of the gunowner, this is just a political stunt to get re-elected because he’s unpopular outside of Reno and Vegas.

You guys just do not get it.

HARR REID the ULTRA LEFTIST GUN HATER WENT TO A SHOOTING RANGE (THAT HE APPROPRIATED MONEY FOR) AND SHOT A FIREARM-HIS OWN PERSONAL SHOTGUN. (he is encouraging a behavior that he otherwise detests etc.)LIAR LIAR

The liberals should be wailing and gnashing their teeth, not us.

We should be publicizing this to show what a liar and arses the corrupt leftists are.

The NRA knows how the game is played. Either you play the game or you get absolutely nothing done.

Other pro-gun group may talk the ideological talk, but I seldom see much of a walk (action, not just rhetoric).

Join both groups, work to get them all in the same mode-educating Americans about their birthrights.

The NRA has consistently gone out of their way to support pro-gun Democrats. They probably have the philosophy that this will bring a bipartisan pro-gun consensus to government.

They have not acknowledged that many politicians use it as a prop to develop some sort of “moderate” credentials, hoping never to have to deal with the issue.

Reid is a stupak on guns.

The problem here is not the NRA, Wayne LaPierre or Harry Reid. The problem is a system where federal dollars are used to construct a local park.

If you want a shooting park, go raise the money and build it....don’t ask Washington for an earmark using my money that I was saving to build my own shooting park!

Most perceptive commment on the thread!

Good luck with that dude.

The NRA endorses left-wing Democrats all across the country and works to undermine hard core state gun groups in state capitols all across the country because it’s not their bill that is being pushed. Or, it’s “too hard core,” like real right to carry.

Wake up man. There were at least two other communist democrat congress people there as well getting their “pro-gun” photo op with the NRA as well.

Wake up. Drop the NRA. They are access-based lobbyists.

And so is LaPierre.

Drop the NRA. They are access-based lobbyists who sell out gunowners across the country on a daily basis.

Join a group like www.nagr.org or www.goa.org.

Dude, Way to go. You, as a conservative can accomplish more to divide the shooting public than the radical progressives can. Just keep parroting that line and they will win this struggle.

How about this as an option: encourage NRA members to vote for a board of directors who will change the NRA hierarchy. As a professional gunsmith and gunstore owner, I have a LOT of skin in this. I am a NRA life member and also contribute to other gun-rights orgs.

Look at it like the GOP. Do you propose a 3rd party at this point, or do you support changing the GOP from within? These are long term issues that will not change overnight and will not change by DIVIDING those who want the same thing, which in this case is a properly respected 2nd Amendment to the Constitution.

Come on, work together to change this and stop dividing. I despise that POS Reid and want him unemployed as much as the next sane person. However, attacking the NRA is not the way to accomplish that.

You just don’t get it and thus, the gun registries with the government will keep getting larger, more finger prints, more regulations, more bad gun bills, and on and on and on.

Do you not support “Real Right to Carry” Bills? The NRA does not.

They compromise and cut back room deals and work with left-wing leadership and governors just to get what THEY want, not what is best for gun owners.

I’m sorry your contributions to the NRA paid for Mr. LaPierre’s car ride to cut deals with Reid to get taxpayer money for a gun park, paid for the dinner he and Reid had together to cut the deal, his flight to Las Vegas for this event, his car ride over to the park so he and Reid and Titus could all get their campaign photos together.

You just don’t get it man. The time for “working with the other side” is over. LaPierre and the NRA are masters at that and look what happens.

I guarantee come election day, at least one or two tv ads or radio ads or direct mail pieces will feature a picture of LaPierre and Reid together.

Sell outs...

NRA does not sell us out. Yep, they support a**hats like Reid, because they are a guns rights group and only look at that part of a candidates record. This means that NRA members are going to have to make changes within the leadership of the NRA, not to abandon it. The NRA is all that has stood between us and total take over of our guns. If it ever dies, so do we.
