Thanks to the folks over at National Review for spilling the beans on this travesty. In a piece titled Racial Voyeurism we learn that our famously post racial President just can't move beyond matters of race. Even though most Americans don't care about race, our current government can only be described as "obsessed" with it. The latest fiasco is the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) which requires lenders to identify the race of the applicant even if the applicant refuses to provide the information. The handbook for the HAMP program specifically states;
| “If a borrower declines to provide GMD, the servicer should attempt to provide the information based on visual observation, information learned from the borrower or surname.” |

This reminds me of the forms we have to fill out for the kids at school. They say we HAVE to tell the kids’ race. Why should it even matter?

The only reason the government can possibly have for wanting to know the color of your skin is so that it can discriminate on the basis of the color of your skin.
I am certainly mixed - Irish, Scotts, German, a couple of vikings, who knows what else... might be a polar bear in there somewhere...
That seems to be pretty standard throughout the gubermint and was in effect far before the current _resident moved in.

This is nothing new. When we applied for a mortgage years ago, we were asked how we wanted to identify our race. I told the mortgage people we would not answer the question. They then told us that if we chose not to answer, they were required to do so on our behalf.
Nevertheless, change your name to Rastus Leroy Jefferson, speak in Ebonics, wear hip-hop clothing, flash some gang signs, and tell them to guess yo' race.

The government fully intends to provide the data to third party community groups, on which banks are making “enough” loans to certain demographics and then let those local thugs extort the banks with the help of the local media.
That would have been in direct contradiction of the published HUD documents at the time. The preference was to ALWAYS have race/ethnicity self identified.
Reparations.
That’s been done at loan application for probably 30 years. The modification part would already have that info.
