NFL Championship Weekend
My big mouth blog ^ | 01/21/11 | Flood

Posted on 01/21/2011 9:19:09 AM PST by jpf

As the Patriots would say, these are T-shirt and hat games this weekend. Too bad for the Patriots they will be home watching it with you and me thanks to the Jets. The NFL Championship games are Sunday, the two winners get a trip to the Super Bowl in Dallas while the losers get to send unused T-shirts and hats to Haiti. Sure most of them are size XXX, they'll shrink in the wash. See, everybody wins, sort of.

We have the polls again in the sidebar, feel free to participate. Last week we were mostly right as a group, except no one, I mean not a soul, saw that Jets win coming. That's okay, neither did Tom Brady. He didn't seem to recognize a corner blitz either.

3 PM ET the Packers travel to the Bears on FOX. These teams have played each other a zillion times give or take, but this is the first playoff game between the two since the Bears beat the Pack the week after Pearl Harbor. I think the Packers passing game has improved since then so I'm going with the Pack.

Here's the problem, Vegas has the Pack as a 3½ point road favorite and that's got to be ticking the Bears off just a little. If they needed more motivation there it is, will it do for them what it did for the Jets or Seahawks earlier? Will it be good Jay at QB this weekend? I still think the Packers, but it could go either way.

There's a personal angle here too, Barack Obama is a Bears fan... I know, I'd hate to take that out on a whole geographical region. Plus my sister-in-law, who is the sweetest nicest person in the world, really good to my kids, and has to put up with my brother, is a Bears fan. Who do I root for now? That's a tough one, right? Sorry sis, hate is stronger than love in football.

At 6:30 PM ET the Jets take on the Steelers on CBS. The Steelers again? Really? Too bad they aren't a big market team or they might have 10 Super Bowls. Steelers are favored by 3½ points, which means Vegas thinks this is pretty even. The Steelers have always been my secondary rooting interest, meaning when the Eagles dropped out I always pulled for the Steelers. Then again you gotta love the way the Jets play football, winning all those road playoff games.

I might root for the Jets, but I think Steelers... how about in overtime?

Have a good weekend, enjoy the games.

I'm calling Packers/Jets.

I'm a Giants fan. I am much more confident in the Pack than I am the Jets.

Which bar? Jack Russell’s, Molly Pitchers, Resevoir, Proof? There are tons of Steelers bars here. Should be a heck of a scene.

As a Steelers fan (wearing my jersey as I type), I’d rather play Chicago than Green Bay in the Super Bowl. On the other hand, I pretty much loathe the Bears as a franchise, and frankly, anything to do with Chicago these days. So, I’m torn here. The Packers are playing very well right now and the Bears haven’t faced a serious test in weeks. Green Bay 23-14.

As much as I’d love to say the Steelers will trounce the Jets, that’s not likely. (I can still hope, however.) The Jets have enough receiver threats to give Pittsburgh trouble, unless of course they can get to Sanchez. In a close game, the Jets may have the edge, though as noted upthread, it’s hard to choose again Big Ben in a Big Game. Best way to beat the Jets? Get ahead early and attack Sanchez. Steelers 31-20.

Obama predictated a Bars win, so I’m betting my lungs on GB (and I’m a Bears fan).

True, non-division winners have a hard time getting in the playoffs, and at some points in NFL history nearly no chance. But generally if the teams are good they find a way, my Steelers face a division opponent almost every year they get in the playoffs, heck we even got to stomp on the Browns back in 02.

But this will only be their second post season meeting. Which almost defies logic. I mean I know for many years at least one of the two teams stunk, but I didn’t realize how consistent that trend was

This stat is a bit misleading. For many years there were no such things as "wildcard" teams, and the Packers and Bears are from the same division. This precluded them meeting each other as one getting into the playoffs would mean the other didn't.

YOU MIGHT BE A PACKER FAN IF…

The Halloween pumpkin on your front porch has more teeth than your
spouse.

You let your twelve-year-old daughter smoke at the dinner
table in front of her kids.

Last year you hid Easter eggs under cow pies.

You’ve been married three times and still have the same in-laws.

You think a woman who is “out of your league” bowls on a different
night.

Jack Daniels makes your list of “Most Admired People.”

You think Genitalia is an Italian airline.

You wonder how service stations keep their restrooms so clean.

Anyone in your family ever died right after saying, “Hey, y’all

You’ve got more than one brother named ‘Darryl.’

You think that Dom Perignon is a Mafia leader.

Your family tree doesn’t fork.

Your wife’s hairdo was once ruined by a ceiling fan.

You go to your family reunion looking for a date.

Your Junior/Senior Prom had a Daycare.

You think the last words to The Star Spangled Banner are,
“Gentlemen, Start your engines.”

You lit a match in the bathroom and your house exploded right
off its wheels.

You take a six-pack cooler to church.

You had to remove a toothpick for your wedding pictures.

You just need one more hole punched in your card to get a

You have flowers planted in a bathroom fixture in your front yard.

Y’all can’t get married to yer sweetheart ’cause there’s a law
against it.

You dated one of your parents’ current spouses in high school.

You think loading the dishwasher means getting your wife drunk.

Your school fight song is “Dueling Banjos.”

Did you watch the PACK obliterate the Falcons?
Just wait for the Super Bowl and the Pack will handle the Steelers.

The Green Bay Packers have won more championships — 12 — than any other team in National Football League history.
They won their first three by league standing (1929, 1930 and 1931), and nine since the NFL’s playoff system was established in 1933 (1936, 1939, 1944, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1996).
Green Bay also is the only NFL team to win three straight titles, having done it twice (1929-30-31 and 1965-66-67).
In addition, the Packers won the first two Super Bowls (over Kansas City in 1966, 35-10, and over Oakland in 1967, 33-14), as well as a more recent one (over New England in 1996, 35-21).
Since the league implemented a playoff system in 1933, the Packers have played in the NFL’s deciding game 12 times (10 NFL title appearances from 1936-67, two Super Bowls after the 1970 merger). Only the Giants (18) have played for more titles.

The Packers have a great history in the NFL and a long rivalry with the Bears and have not played each other in post season since 1941, so the NFC Championship is probably one of the most important games between these two teams.

As of January 2, 2011, there have been 181 games between the two teams—most in NFL history—since their first league game in 1921, of which the Bears have won 92 and the Packers 83. The Bears have only scored 112 more points than GB in 180 games.

As of 2010, the Bears and Packers are the NFL’s two most successful franchises. The two clubs have won a combined 21 championships in the league’s 91-year history.

The Packers lost 6 games in 2010 by 20 points in total and they could have/should have won those 6 games.

Keep in mind Spaeth dropped two passes for touchdowns but did a great job blocking all day long and why we ran for over 100 yards. Steelers by 16 since Ellis is not 100% and "The Terrorist" Chris Kemoeatu #68 will handle him with ease when matched up with him.

Look for Wallace to go deep today after the two rookies run a few deep routes and wear down the Jets secondary. It would nice though to see "Big Snack" line up in the backfield in a goal line situation. Big Casey Hampton goes about 350 and he would simply scare the Jets linebackers away.

Most importantly though will be that the Jets punter will cost them the game due to giving the Steelers good field position all day long.

Steelers by 16.

If one looks back yes the Pack is number one. But in modern times of football the greatest franchise is the Pittsburgh Steelers. We have 6 Super Bowl wins and there is nobody out the that can match our record. We are Pittsburgh! We play football the way it supposed to be played and our record proves it. We are Pittsburgh.

I bleed Black and Gold so i would say that qualifies me and part of Pittsburgh. Have only missed one game in the past 22 years. That was because of a power outage due to a storm. The world stops at this house when the steelers line up. And yes I helped build Heinz Field and i know every piece of plumbing in the place.

HA HA HA Baseball here in The Burgh isn't exactly what i would call professional even though we do have one of if not the best stadium in the country. The PiRates are a second class team by far and i think they should move down to the AAA minor leagues and maybe they will stop losing 100 games a year. I Know of only 1 guy that pays any attention to baseball. It is all football then hockey. Baseball died here when Clemete passed away some years ago. Granted we had Stargell and Parker and we are family but it just wasn't the same. One thing i am pretty sure of is that only Bradshaw and Montana have 4 super bowl rings and no QB in today's game can some close to how good they were.

I still think the steelers should put "Big Snack" in the backfield today and let him get in motion to build up a head of steam, hand him the ball and see how many bowling pins he can break as he scores a touchdown. For enticement somebody can hold a German chocolate cake at the other side of the end zone. Go Casey Go!

This thing will not be even close.

By the numbers for the Steelers:

Home field........ +3
No first play kickoff return return for a TD like the first game...........+1
Quarterbacks, experience vs a 2 year guy..................+3
Heath Miller AND Palamalo back for this game.................+2
Steelers are a maturing team, not good long term, but perfect for now......+2

And here is a fact few people know:
It is going to be 9 degrees at game time.
Rothlisberger wears a glove and loves it. Sanchez hates a glove. Cold fingers will create problems.

A note posted on the board by Casey Hampton in the Steelers locker room. This has been a tradition at important Steeler games:

WHAT WE ARE PLAYING FOR TODAT

$156,000
Potential $26,000 ring

Don't mess with my money!
