My "never say Die" car (vanity)
RCA2000

Posted on 09/23/2011 9:31:38 AM PDT by Rca2000

I have a "never say did" car. one of those older cars, that all you have to do is DRIVE them(and keep up normal maintenance of course). They just go and go, WITHOUT many serious repairs.

A few may remember over 2.5 years ago, when I made a trip to Key West Fl, to drive back an old car--a 1989 Olds Trofeo. WHen I did this--many laughed, saying i was wasting a LOT of money(1500 for the sac--about 400 for the trip), and that the car would NOT hold uo long. nevertheless...I got it, brought it home, and after a couple of minir-self--done repairs on the dash and ABS--I began to drive it EVERY day. I hoped for at least a year of re;atively trouble--free use from the car. It had about 105K on it--when I drove it home

That was in Feb. of 2009. Since then--I have put MAYBE 1500 TOTAL repairs in the car--probably less--including "Preventive maintenence items--and now have115K on the car. I drive it EVERY day--about 70 miles Rt--to my job. It asks VERY little of me--and has only let me down ONE time--3 miles from home--2 years ago. It BADLY needs painted---but NEVER fails to start even in -10degrees in about a second--runs and drive nice--STILL!! with over 25MPG on the road!!

How many have a car like this?

Wife had one for 10 years, a 2000 Ford contour, V6. Finally gave up the ghost at 178K (started missing under load, engine rebuild recommended).

2000 Nissan Frontier with 268K miles. More than enough miles to reach the moon. Still going strong.

I'm guessing the 1500 is dollars, not the total # of repairs executed :)

I bought an ‘85 Olds 4 dr with 42,000 miles. Gave it away a few years later with 300,000 on it. It still ran great but I was afraid it was going to die on me someday so I gave it to a friend.

I have a friend with a Toyota that is one if the most comfortable and best riding cars I have ever been in. It is a Camry. She maintains it herself. Changes the oil, brakes, wipers, filters, etc. It has 350,000 miles on it.

Yep! We have several circa 1983 and 1984 Audi diesels which are off the road right now needed some TLC but since we have a total of about $900 in both cars the $500 that it will take to put both back on the road will be nothing. We also own a 1984 VW Gulf diesel that has about 90,000 mi on the new motor that we paid $600 for about a decade ago that is still roaring along.

Had a “Cowboy Cadillac” for 14 years...Black with a red interior (which was also usually mostly black, because Pepper, my Black Lab, would NOT let that thing go anywhere without her, but that’s another story) racked up about 275,000 miles. I couldn’t give it up, but moved. Left it to my son. He had two more years and I dunno how many miles, had an accident and had it towed away.

For us, it was a 1984 Saab 900 Turbo 5-speed.

Apart from routine maintenance, the only work it ever needed was a turbo-charger replacement at 245,000 miles.

The car was still running strong at 389,000 miles when the father of my 1st grandchild totalled it hitting a deer.

I recently let go my 1999 Olds Cutlass Supreme, bought new in 1999. I loved that car. It got 24 mpg in city and about 32 on highway. 6 cylinders, sun roof, leather. It had about 114,000 miles, needed new tires and some suspension work that were going to be over $1,000 at a minimum... For the most part, it was fairly trouble free. It was nearly totalled in about 2001 when T-boned, but they put it back together. I just got to feeling like it was not so safe anymore, needed $$ to keep going, and wondering what the next big problem might be. But I MISS IT.

I have a 2002 F250 SD diesel with 212k miles.

Other than regular maintenance, I have had one problem: an engine wiring harness short that took out the fuse box and the harness. That was $3500 in repairs ($1100 in parts for the new harness and fuse box alone).

The truck, even at 9 years old and that many miles, is still selling on the used market for ~$18k or so. A new one with the same options costs ~$57k. I bought it new and intend on keeping it forever.

1995 Chevy S-10 Blazer 225,000 with only some minor issues. PITA to work on though.

1984 CJ-7 hunting Jeep. Starts and goes every time and has never let me down. Not real comfy.

1983 F-250 with a 460 and manual trans. Ranch truck. Pass anything (or pull it) except a gas station.
