DES MOINES Virginias attorney general said on Saturday that he will propose emergency legislation to change the states ballot access laws in ways that would make it easier for candidates to qualify.
The legislation would allow any presidential candidate to appear on the ballot for the states March 6 primary if they meet the requirements to qualify for federal matching funds.
That would likely allow Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to participate in the primary after both failed to gather the required signatures under Virginias current standards.
Recent events have underscored that our system is deficient. Virginia owes her citizens a better process, said Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, the attorney general and a Republican, in a statement We can do it in time for the March primary if we resolve to do so quickly.
The legislature would have to approve the idea and Virginia officials said it was unclear how the politics of such a move would play out. Republicans control the House of Delegates and are tied with Democrats in the state Senate.
The legislature is scheduled to return to Richmond on January 11 and could take up the issue then. It could also reconvene earlier in a special session to consider the idea.
Bob McDonnell, the states Republican governor, issued a statement saying he would review any legislation passed, but stopped short of endorsing it.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum joined the lawsuit, originally filed Tuesday, challenging provisions that determine who can appear on the primary ballot.
All five candidates filing the lawsuit failed to qualify for the ballot."......
I thought they were unqualified, after being qualified, for being unqualified....
Happy New Year!
It looks like they’ve reconsidered their position — or plan to.
IMO, whoever is running the dog and pony show that ensured any of them got left off should be slapped repeatedly about the face and ears.
If any of the people running election campaigns couldn’t get the job done to get their candidate on the ticket because there isn’t the necessary support from the people, that info should surely be relayed promptly to them so they can reevaluate.
Well, all’s well that ends well.
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
And I think the Virginia thing is just the start of the debacle process.
I feel pretty good about all this and with the Gov's action, something will be done and we will see all of them on the ballot as should be. Seems even the Judge wanted this.
It’s very positive.
Perry knows how to get the job done.
Executives act.
I think we need to get rid of both problems!
Regarding “support from the people”, neither of the guys on the ballot have much of that. Most of the “support from the people” was directed toward the guys that didn’t get on the ballot.
For me to do anything entails the use of an M60 and LOTS of ammo. Just sayin'.
Which is why, of course, they didn’t fit on the ticket. They fit the bill.
LOL. I read about a church in ID who ordered some doors and had to get someone from WY to install them because the LDS companies nearby wouldn’t do it. But that does happen.
What you read is the Stake President got his worthless SIL some temporary work. It does happen.
bttt
LOL. Yep.
“Yea, verily. I live in S.E. Idaho. Predominantly mormon.”
Nope... the largest religious group in Idaho is Catholic.
I’m sorry, Christian not Catholic...
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the largest religion in the region (wikipedia and personal x-peer-ience)
